Today's Featured Biography
Brian Sharer
Hi all,
It's just fantastic to see technology in action, and big thanks to Gabby for putting in all her work on this site. Who could have imagined this thing called the Internet in 1987? (besides maybe those guys in the Computer Club)
I attended Colgate University in upstate NY after graduation and received a BA in Biology. It was pretty useless, so after dinking around in a few labs and delivering pizzas in the Lehigh Valley in the early 90's, I decided to try to finally pay my ridiculous amount of college debt down by doing the only logical thing given my qualifications: commerical fishing in Alaska. I worked for 2 years as a fisheries observer (actually using my degree, I suppose), then joined the Dark Side, working another year and a half for a fishing company as a QC technician on board huge catcher processors in the Bering Sea. I actually knew 2 people from the first season of "The Most Dangerous Catch" on the Discovery Channel. Go figure.
I wasn't really that into the high seas, however, so I decided to go back to school for something a little more practical but still about living things and ecosystems and stuff, so I picked forestry. I got an M.S. in Forest Economics from Oregon State University in 1999 and since then have worked for a few different forest products companies, consulting groups, and timber investment management companies. In 2007, I moved up to the Portland area from Roseburg (Oregon), where I had been working as a consulting forester, with my girlfriend, Heidi, and her 2 kids Ez and Allison. We were married on 10/4/2008. I am very happy, and still sometimes in awe, to think that I actually got married - wow!
Early in the 90's, I had RK surgery to correct my nearsightedness and it didn't turn out so well. Some of the things you might find on me if you track me down on the web stems from my work with the Surgical Eyes Foundation, a non-profit and website I co-founded in 1999 to help those with problems following refractive surgery of any kind. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who have problems from RK, PRK, and LASIK, I came to find out. I've since retired from the governing board of the organization and it has moved on under new leadership, but I remain involved a little bit with several organizations and doctors working to help out the cause.
Great to see everyone in cyberspace, and it would be great to hear from anyone who feels so inspired: my email is [email protected].
Final parting note: Leonard Perrett and Judith Smullen, in that order, were and are still to this day the two greatest influences on my world view. I really suck, because I've never taken the time to thank them until right now!
OK, back to work!
-Brian
