Today's Featured Biography
Joan Garuti Garuti
I have lived in so many towns in NH always longing for that time I would live in Unity and I am finally there. I knew early in life NH was my home. It all began with a family trip, all five kids, my Mom and Dad, loaded in a station wagon, driving up 93 coming around a corner near Plymouth NH and wow, the hills of the White Mountains! I was instantly in love. It continued at UNH in Durham NH. That campus! Beautiful!
Recreation and Park Management was my my major, but still living in a time when women were the last picked for jobs, I gave up applying to town Rec & Park jobs. Bet they never asked men who applied, "Who will watch your kids while you are at work?" No worries, I ran a childcare using my my experience from my final paper, Play is a Child's Work. I got to raise my kids myself and earn income and I am still in touch with many of my daycare kids and their parents.
After doing childcare for about 20 years, I went into retail and worked at Corning and then Farberware. At this point I left my first husband. He gave me three incredible kids and nothing else positive. So one mother's day, I left. I continued at Farberware for a bit and then went on to Kinkos, Follett Bookstores and ended up at The Cheshire Horse where I retired to take care of my youngest grandchild and my aging mother.
At that time I got into farming and plan to continue that as long as I can.
After dating Johnny for 20 years, we finally got married. We got together doing outdoor recreation...paddling, camping, hiking, 4Wheeling, swimming. He got very sick this past year, but I hope his health will return so we can get back to those activities again.
There is little money in childcare, nor retail so to supplement my income I accidently rolled into house flipping. I'd buy wrecks with good bones and a roof that I could afford and make them livable, then move as my jobs changed. Our house in Unity took all the skills I had learned along the way.
I am enjoying retirement and still take care of my youngest grandson one day a week which is the highlight of my life.
