Today's Featured Biography
Amy Ray Fox
Hello Everyone!
I don't know if any of you really remember me from high school. I was pretty shy back then. Growing up seemed to change that for me.
After High School my father was stationed to Hickam AFB in Honolulu, HI, so I got a nice three year vacation on the beautiful island. I didn't do much there besides soak up the sun and play in the ocean. I did work a bit in daycare, but that was about it. I had my first son in 1989, right before graduation, but I finished school and headed off into life as a single mother.
In 1992, we moved back to the mainland. My parents stayed in their native California town while my sister and I headed up to WA to find a place. We had nothing but sleeping bags, a car, and $6000.00. It was quite an experience. Thanks to my best friend in high school and her family, my sister, son, and I were able to have a roof over our heads while we looked for a home of our own. We found a place in Puyallup, WA. The first one was a bit of a dump up on South Hill, but we could pay the rent. My sister worked at KFC, so we had a hot meal every night. LOL. We ate off paper plates and sat on the floor for 10 months just being young and free. Our furniture and things were sitting in crates after they arrived on the mainland -in storage- until my parents found a permanent residence.
During our time in Puyallup, I didn't do much job wise. I was very nervous about finding work or going to school. I had always been scared of people and things, but I began to have trouble even leaving the house.
In 1995, I decided to move back to Vacaville, California to be closer to my family. It wasn't long after relocating that I discovered I had Social Phobia and Agoraphobia.
If you don't know what Social Phobia is, here's a link: http://www.socialphobia.org/whatis.html#whatis
And here's a link to Agoraphobia: http://pages.infinit.net/drnayman/agorapho.htm
I had begun to have panic attacks so often that it caused me to go to the doctor. I felt like an idiot telling him about my fears and how I was afraid that if I didn't see a doctor I would never leave the house again. I was relieved to find that I had a treatable condition. It was something that I had suffered with my entire life and will probably have forever. I went through a couple years of therapy and was put on medication. It changed my life!
I went back to school in 1997. I even made it through Drama and Speech class! How's that for the shy girl in school? In 1999, I received my Associate Degree in Liberal Arts. I transferred to Sacramento State where I intended to get my teaching credentials to teach elementary school. Then, junior year -like many students seems to do in college- I changed my major over to Graphic Design with a minor in Art. It was a perfect match. I excelled in all of my classes because art has always been a passion of mine. I still could get my teaching credentials and teach if that's what I decided.
Meanwhile, I had been dating online. I know you always see those freaky people who meet the "love of their life" on the other side of the country and move there to marry. I don't believe that you can fall in love through emails though, so I only dated people locally, using the internet as the way to find them. I'm telling you, there were never any single guys in the supermarket picking up chicks, or in church. And in school, everyone my age was married already, so the internet worked for me. I went on a lot of bad dates. I also went on a few decent ones; but then, I went on one that changed my life forever. Joseph Fox, a native San Franciscan, and I married over a year after we began dating. He moved out of the city to Vacaville (about 60 miles out of his way). We married in 2001.
In my senior year of College, I became pregnant with our first child. Needless to say, I put the education on hold for a few years. It's not easy going from an active student back to a house mom again. That's why I keep busy. I am the Administrator to the Vacaville, CA's section of Freecycle.org. I'm also the Administrator and Owner of The Solano County Exchange Program. In addition, I work as an amateur graphic artist, making designs for personal and business use as well as design web pages. I am the web master for my son's elementary school. AND, I run a small daycare out of my home for a steady income until I decide what I really want to do. Nothing like keeping busy, is there? Now I'm volunteering to do this site.
We have 4 children now. 3 boys and 1 girl (FINALLY!). Patrick, Dylan, Michael (Yes, Michael J. Fox- It’s Joseph after his father LOL), and Erin. Sure, I have a lot left to do with my life. But it's just beginning now, isn't it? They say life begins at 40. I'll let you know. :)
