Today's Featured Biography
Ed Calhoon
As I’m sure it is with most of you, my life the last 20 years seems a blur at the moment. Condensing will be very difficult for a man as long winded or full of #@*! as myself, so beware of all that may follow. After graduation from EHS, I utilized important family connections in order to get into college in Arkansas at Hendrix College, graduating with a BA in Literature in ‘92. I married my long-legged, fine-lookin’ high school sweetheart that summer, and we celebrated our 16th anniversary this August in Vegas. Uh...does anyone have some money I can borrow? Anyway, as I felt led into the ministry after college, I immediately took a youth pastor position with the First United Methodist Church of Jacksonville, Ark – a suburb of Little Rock. Well, it basically kicked my butt, for I learned that ministry is more administration than teaching, preaching, and ministering, which are the only gifts I possess. Since I am basically organizationally retarded, I decided I had better move into a different field; thus, one of the worst academic students in history went back to school to acquire the necessary education courses to become a HS literature teacher. The ripple effect of this decision was felt all the way back in Tulsa where Mrs. Benson promptly fainted in front of her 11th grade English class while explicating Chaucer. During this same time period, my wife, Jenifer, completed her masters in Speech Language Pathology from the University of Central Arkansas. These were good years in Arkansas where we made many friends and served many meals waiting tables while finishing our degrees. Life was slow, laid back and easy, then…
We moved back to Tulsa in 96’ to start our careers. Jenifer had no trouble finding work, and I had to substitute for a year in order to get my foot in the door with a school system. I finally was offered my 1st position at Bixby coaching girls’ basketball and teaching 11th grade American Literature....and Mrs. Benson went into cardiac arrest. Now I wanted to coach basketball, however, girls were not even remotely on the radar of possibilities in my mind; however, as I’m sure most of you have learned – God has a WONDERFUL sense of humor. Actually, I learned to really enjoy coaching girls and have stayed in it to this day.
We had our first son, Keats, during the Bixby years. He came out of the womb running, and to our exhaustion, has never stopped – sweet kid though. I took my first head coaching position @ Tulsa Memorial in ‘97 – I know, EHS graduate coaching the Chargers just isn’t right, but my life is full of irony. I stayed there for 4 years during which we had Caleb and Gabriel (there is a lot of testosterone in our home). I then took over the Metro Christian Girls Basketball program for 3 years in ‘01, and in my final year, made the state tournament for the first and only time in my head-coaching career. I used that one year of success to gain the head girls position at BA where I have been getting my butt viciously kicked for 2 years now, so don’t find me impolite if I don’t sit down next to any of you – I’m still a little sore on the backside.
If you are attending Friday night, I look forward to seeing you again. My 4th grader has a football game Sat, and since I am one of the coaches (glorified water boy), I probably need to be there. Bobby Buschee’ needs to provide some quality H20 to all the 4th grade athletes!
