Today's Featured Biography
Russell Mahan
I left Artesia in 1978 for boot camp. Became a parachute rigger - survival technician in the Navy. I graduated from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University (though I attended many colleges and universities around the country) in Daytona Beach FL with a BS and MS.
My Navy career took me all over the world several times. I attended parachute riggers school out of boot camp and worked in squadrons taking care of survival equipment. I was stationed in Virginia Beach VA in a fighter squadron; I made several deployments overseas on the USS Saratoga CV-60 and USS Forrestal CV-59 and made various detachments around the country including Top Gun - several times.
During these years, I moved to the beach which is where I met my wife, she was my next door neighbor while she was on a Christian outreach program. Later we transferred to California, I was an aircrew survival instructor there.
Transfered to Hawaii to a sub hunter and search and rescue squadron and worked part time as lifeguard on the beaches. I made a number of deployments overseas to many different countries.
Then we were off to New Jersey, transferred to the parachute riggers school to teach students coming out of bootcamp. The base was closed after a couple of years and we transferred to Memphis TN where I was assigned as chief administrator for an advanced training school.
Later moved to Norfolk VA area, I was assigned to the aircraft carrier USS America CV-66 and then the USS T. Roosevelt CVN-71. I was injured at the end of my last tour on T. Roosevelt and was sent to Bethesda hospital in MD (Washington DC area). Later assigned to HQ there in Washington and retired with disability after 21 years. I took a job as a civilian working for Dept of Defense. I developed the data base driven system for tracking GPS devices for search and rescue (SAR) that is used by NOAA for civil SAR and Army, Navy, Marines, and Air-Force and is being used worldwide today to find and extract people in emergency situations.
Worked as the information officer for the engineering dept at Navair Systems Command until 2003 when we were transfered to Orlando FL. I am now involved in building flight simulators and training for Navy aircrew. I also work part-time with Harley-Davidson teachcing the motorcycle riding classes.
Living in Orlando, FL. with my wife Janice and my three kids: Brian (in college), Amber (in college) and Joshua (in high school). My wife and I are avid M/C riders, we love to dive, I teach Okinawa karate-do and escrima (Modern Arnis) 2 nights a week at a Navy center were I work as part of our physical fitness program at the base. We travel frequently, go on cruises. My work takes me all over and my wife will frequently travel with me, but South Beach in Miami and Key West are favorites.
