Grant Hoover

I was Student Council President in 1981 at Bellevue West, not Class President. But when we had our reunion in 2001, everyone called me Class President; which I kind of liked since I did enjoy Bellevue West. And felt I was one the leader’s in the class. (My story, since then, was that I knew I wasn’t going to start on the football team, so I had to make my name elsewhere in high school.)

It looks like only a handful of us put forth a profile, and I look forward to getting in contact with them. I hope more of our classmates get involved so we can rally up with a 30-year reunion in 2011.

After graduating from Bellevue West in 1981, I went to UNL and was member of Sigma Nu fraternity where I continued my fun loving ways. Upon graduation in 1985, I went into the Marine Corps as a helicopter pilot – CH-53E Super Stallion. I kept busy with the fleet life with three 6 month deployments aboard Navy ships in the Mediterranean. I was in the Persian Gulf during Desert Shield 1, but when it came time for action, I had orders for a FAC tour (Forward Air Controller) with a 3/8 Marines. In 1994, I got out as a Captain and stayed in North Carolina (my base station was New River near Camp Lejeune).

A couple years before I got out of the Marine Corps, I moved 1 hour south to Wrightsville Beach, NC. It was there that I got to truly enjoy the Jimmy Buffet life that Doug Hassel espoused in his awesome high school parties at Beaver Lake. In 1995, as a civilian, I started Wright Times magazine – a fun beach magazine. It was kind of odd – a jarhead from Nebraska starts a magazine at a beach in North Carolina. I even bought a 26-foot boat named “Cleared Hot.” (I wanted to keep the title - Captain!)

Unfortunately, the beach life transpired into – what I call – the “seedy side of Jimmy Buffet life.” The songs may sound great – but when you are a regular, as opposed to vacationing – you realize you are hanging around a bunch of drunks. Although I enjoyed my entrepreneur venture, I stayed there too long. Finally in the spring of 2002, I decided to move back to Nebraska.

Once back in Nebraska, I got my MBA at UNO under the GI Bill. While living in the Old Market, I meet my wonderful wife – Kara at Upstream Brewery. (My goal was to restart life in Nebraska and start a family.) Kara Schweiss, 39, - who has kept her last name – works in the corporate marketing department at Gordman’s, a retail chain that has over 60 stores. We got married (a first for both of us) on May 27, 2005. We have a wonderful son, Brock, 16 months (02/27/2006).

Unlike my family life, my career in Nebraska has not taken off. I was a truck dispatcher at Werner Trucking and a sales rep at InfoUSA/Salesgenie.com. Currently I am in “transition mode” for a future career.

I would love to hear from our classmates. We definitely need to have a reunion in 2011. Although, 2001 was fun – especially at the Bellevue Berry Farm, the dinner at the Legion – or whatever that was – was pretty much a disaster.
