Steven White
It was great to see you folks who made it in for the reunion. Also nice to see you who were friends since we all were feather-haired, polyester-clad kids...remain so. (Um, the friends part, not the other stuff.) Missed the rest of you, especially my soccer and theater/creative buds!
I graduated Mizzou with a journalism degree in '91 and then started a career as the new "Ring Around the Collar" guy (I'm an ad copywriter). I've been on my own as a freelance writer for almost 15 years. It is challenging and a lot of fun for me. You know those CRAPPY ads you see and hear? Those AREN'T mine.
I was married for nearly 10 wonderful years when my wife, Jen, died from a sudden illness in the summer of 2001. This was right around the time that my first book, "Family Vacations & Other Hazards of Growing Up" was published.
It took me a while to [try to] get back on my feet; a year later, I went on a bittersweet tour in a '76 Buick Estate Wagon (whew, I became a decent mechanic by the end of that blue-smoke adventure); I was interviewed by a bunch of media including on national TV and USA Today, NPR, etc. Big whoop...that was about 5 of my proverbial 15 minutes, ha.
Anyway, now that the book has a bit of a track record, I'm thinking of shopping it to one of the major houses...we'll see. Or turning it into a film. Meantime, I've started writing another book (more short essay humor) which should be out in a few years. So check my site if you're interested in a smile or two. Someday you'll hear me on This American Life. Sedaris, you got nuthin'! Ha.
Hey, we are all pushing up against 40 so I don't pretend to have the answers any more than anybody else. Or that my experiences have been harder than anyone else's. But this is where I am now so take it fwiw: we all know that life intervenes in cruel and unthinkable ways...and at those times it may seem hard to move forward. But things can get better. No, not perfect, but better. Time helps. Faith helps. Family and friends help. Along with just trying.
With that in mind, I sincerely wish all the best to you and your loved ones. Because when it comes down to it...doesn't it seem like we're all here to make things a little better for each other? Peace. --Steve
P.S. I'd like to give a special thanks to Scott, Rachel, Theresa, Mike and everyone who helped put the reunion and all this stuff together. Really thoughtful of you guys.
