Today's Featured Biography
Kevin Ferris
Kevin Ferris - Biography
Kevin was diagnosed with a psychiatric condition in his early 20's and through many trials and tribulations recognized the need to connect with others with similar experiences. This however was extremely difficult because there were no self-help/support groups in Minnesota for people living with a psychiatric condition. So, Kevin decided to start a group in his living room, which continues in its 42nd year as the Minnesota Depressive and Manic-Depressive Association/Mental Health Association, of which he served as the Founding Director.
This was the beginning of the work Kevin has passionately continued for over 40 years in helping people to recover from illnesses that affect brain functioning while advocating in regard to mental health issues on federal, state and local levels. He was on the original Steering Committee that organized and launched what is now known as the Depressive Bi-Polar Support Alliance (DBSA) and later became the Founding Executive Director of the Consumer Survivor Network of Minnesota (CSN). While in Minnesota, Kevin also served on numerous state and local councils as well as council to the Governor's office on mental health.
Kevin moved to Arizona in 1997 and after spending several years working in the family publishing business he returned to Behavioral Health and began working at Triple R Behavioral Health with the Peer Training Program where he trained people living with a psychiatric condition to work in the field.
In 2005 Kevin Ferris was hired as CEO of Survivors United a drop-in center which he re-organized into C.H.E.E.E.R.S., Inc. (Center 4 Health Enlightenment Enrichment Empowerment Renewal Services). This non-profit behavioural health agency provides a variety of recovery-related services for people living with a chemical imbalance or behavioural health challenges. One of the many things that make C.H.E.E.E.R.S. unique from other agencies is the fact that it is Peer Run and Driven, meaning that all C.H.E.E.E.R.S. staff members are also living with a psychiatric or behavioural health condition themselves, even its CEO. In just three and a half years as CEO Kevin took the agency from the verge of closure with very few consistent members, to an agency that served over 850 active members. Agency staff increased from 8 to over 35 and C.H.E.E.E.R.S. physical space is three times the original size. And most importantly, Kevin and his team created a supportive recovery-focused environment that empowers people to identify and utilize their strengths to improve their lives.
In 2008 Kevin was hired as the first Consumer Affairs Coordinator at NARBHA the Northern Arizona Regional Behavioral Health Authority a Non-Profit managed care Organization.
In addition to his work in Arizona, Kevin was appointed to the AZ Behavioral Health Planning Council and served on numerous systems change committees at ADHS. Appointed to the Board of Directors of the AZ Human Service Providers where he Co-Chaired the Recovery Ad Hoc committee, and was a participating member of the Substance Abuse and Advocacy subcommittees. He also served on the Board of Directors of Southwest Network a Maricopa Provider Network Organization, Treasurer and President of the AZ CEOs (Peer Run Peer Driven Agencies). He was on the Executive Committee of the Maricopa Consumers Advocates Providers Association (MCAP).
In 2009 Kevin's life partner accepted a position as a researcher and neonatologist at UNM where he soon followed. Since moving to New Mexico, Kevin had been very active in volunteering his knowledge and lived experience as a consumer in many areas of New Mexico. He has shared his proven leadership ability by being involved in the local and state planning councils in New Mexico and provided an environment for young people an opportunity to be mentored and offer their perspective as well. In 2014 he retired and followed his husband and moved back to Phoenix AZ for a year and then moved to San Diego CA.
Kevin had started People Owning System Change LLC an organization to help peer advocates to navigate the system change and get advocates at every table to influence that change.
Kevin also has a life outside of the Behavioral Health field where he spends time with Carlos his partner of 25 years. He has been an avid photographer and loves to travel to new photographic destinations around the world.
With all these challenges he received his first Pacemaker implant at 29 years of age. Since then, 6 implants and still going strong like an energizer bunny still ticking!
