Today's Featured Biography
Margaret Janchar Mandl
I attended Wayne State University where I received a B.A. in French and Spanish in 1970. I married Jim Mandl (ND'66) in 1971 and very sadly, he passed away on June 2, 2013 due to complications from pancreatic cancer surgery. I taught French and Spanish for 3 years in Lake Shore Public Schools and then had our two wonderful children, Jim(1972) and Melissa(1973). I went back to teaching in 1976 for Utica Community Schools. I spent the rest of my teaching career in UCS and I retired in June 2010. While teaching in UCS I went back to WSU and earned a Master's in Foreign Language Education (1986) and an Ed. Specialist in Administration and Supervision (1996). In 1989, I received a summer scholarship to study in Paris. That was an amazing time! Over the years I sponsored many trips to France with students. In 1992 I was honored with the Teacher of the Year award from UCS. In 1996, I was honored with the Michigan Foreign Language Teacher of the Year award from the Michigan Foreign Language Association (MFLA). I love teaching languages! I have been a member of the MFLA (MiWLA) for over 30 years and served as its president in the year 2000. In 2005 I was honored with a life-time achievement award for Outstanding Contributions to World Language Teaching in Michigan. I also earned National Board Certification as a French teacher in 2010. When I retired, I missed teaching a lot so I looked for another way to be able to teach again. From January 2011 to November 2015 I taught evening French classes to adults through the Alliance Française de Grosse Pointe. I taught the Intermediate and the Advanced classes on Tuesday evenings. I am also working as a Student Teacher Supervisor for Oakland University and I teach a Foreign Language Methodology class in the spring at OU. I am a huge Detroit Tigers fan. We have lived in Clinton Twp. since 1979. I am very proud of our two children. Jim (ND '90) teaches CAD in the Warren Consolidated Schools and Melissa (Regina '91) received her PhD in Psychology in 2007 and is a school psychologist for UCS. Melissa and her husband, Jason have two beautiful children. Nathale is 11 and Matthew is 7. Grandchildren are truly a gift. My husband so enjoyed them before his death and the grandchildren miss their 'Gramps' so much. I hope to keep in touch with class members through this site.

"Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
