Today's Featured Biography
David Melton
After graduation I went to the University of Kansas, fully intending to major in journalism. I quickly learned that I would actually have to put some effort into being a journalist, so I changed my major to "English." It was easy, I enjoyed reading and writing, and it seemed like a good idea at the time. As it turned out, it really was a good decision, as I met my wife, Ginny, in a British Literature class. We were married in 1990.
When I graduated in 1991 (I was on the five year plan), I found that English majors weren't in very high demand. I worked as an assistant manager at Landmark Luggage at Oak Park Mall and as a customer service representative at Wolferman's before becoming a police officer with the City of Merriam in 1992.
In 1994 our daughter, Emily, was born.
After three years of police work I was ready to go back to school, and I entered the KU School of Law in the Summer of 1995. I was an intern in the Johnson County District Attorney's Office my final year of law school, and I graduated in 1998.
My first job out of law school was as an Assistant County Attorney in Saline County. I handled juvenile offender and child in need of care cases. Salina's a nice town, but it was too far from friends and family, so in 2000 I accepted a position as Assistant County Attorney in Leavenworth County.
In Leavenworth County I established the county's first domestic violence prosecution program. I was then assigned to prosecute major drug cases. I really enjoyed working drug cases, as I was able to work with the U.S. Attorney's office, various federal drug task forces, and the local narcotics officers.
In 2004 the long-time District Attorney of Douglas County was defeated in the election, and I was hired by the new D.A. as an Assistant District Attorney. I now handle major felony cases in Douglas County (I'm currently working on the Boardwalk Apartments triple-murder/arson case).
My wife and daughter and I now live back in Lawrence, and we hope that we're back to stay.
