Today's Featured Biography
Ronald Vaughn
After high school, I left West Frankfort for sunny, southern California. My plane landed in San Diego and boarded a bus to take me to my new place of residency. I was a little bummed since it was dark when I boarded the bus so I knew the drive wasn’t going to be that pretty drive you see in the movies. When we pulled up, I found I was going to live in a gated community that was manned at the gate with armed security. It was going to be a very safe place. The next thing I know some mean man, wearing a funny looking hat that looked like the hat Smokey the Bear use to wear, boarded the bus yelling at us. He was screaming profanities and calling us all maggots. He screamed so loud and told us that we had 10 seconds to get off the bus and that we had already wasted 8 of them. I could not see all of us getting off that bus in 2 seconds. That was a totally unrealistic expectation but I tried my best anyway. I guess we were too slow so he told us to get back on the bus and try it again. This went on for a good 30 or 40 minutes. I was dead tired by the time I got off that bus. That mean man must not have liked our posture because he was telling us to stand on some yellow footprints that were painted on the parking lot, with our chins up, back straight and thumbs along the seam of our trousers. Really? Trousers? This was the 80’s. Nobody called our stone washed jeans trousers unless you were our grandparents. He then proceeded to tell us we were going to be United States Marines if we worked hard and did everything we were told to do. The next 13 weeks were unspeakable so I will leave that to your imagination. The only thing that kept me from going insane was my best friend, Rudy, was with me.
After enduring this long, change of life experience, I was granted permission to come home to see my family for ten days before I had to report to my next place of residency. I was so excited since I was not able to call them or see them for a little more than 3 months!
I was able to finish my "trade school" and was shipped off to beautiful North Carolina where I was able to perform my trade during war time and peace time. I was paid to travel to exotic places like Panama, Puerto Rice, Spain, Italy, France, Israel, Turkey, Egypt and Portugal. They were beautiful places to visit.
When I left the Marine Corps, I met a beautiful, sweet, down to earth lady and married her 2 ½ months later! We met at Fred’s Dance Barn. I don’t know if any of you know about Fred’s but it was a big “Barn” where you were able to bring in your own beer and dance to the music of live bands and ride a mechanical bull. Barb and a couple of her friends came down from the Saint Louis, Mo area to Carbondale to visit one of the lady’s boyfriends. I asked one of her friends to dance. There was something about her that I didn’t find attractive. Not sure what it was, I just wasn’t interested in her. I then asked her other friend to dance. I found her a little; ummm…I don’t know, friendly. I finally asked Barb to dance. I was afraid to ask her because she seemed a little out of my league but I brought up the courage to ask her. Hey, I was a Marine! I never backed down from anything and wasn’t going to back down from this. Anyway, (I’m easily side tracked) we have been married 21 years this past July 6th.
Stay tuned…more to come after these messages!
