Today's Featured Biography
Denise Pantelis
I am a late-bloomer.
I kinda hated high school, as many do, but there were a few redeeming moments and I ultimately did survive.
Two years of "college" in the UP loosened me up a little bit, but then I felt I should be investing those dollars more wisely. After taking a year off and working at the Jewel Food Store in town, I transferred to Loyola University of Chicago where I felt Jesuit oversight of my education was needed.
That was a good decision. So, condensing matters a bit, I took a post-graduation backpacking trip to Europe, returned to live in Chicago and embark on a career in fundraising (yuck), decided to pursue a graduate degree in History at the University of Illinois@Chicago where I received my MA, took an unsolicited job offer to work as a paralegal in a workers comp and pi law firm (double-yuck), got fired because I was too miserable to show up to work, took the severance check and moved to Austin, Texas cause I thought it'd be a cool place to live. It was.
There I met Ken and we married in 1998. At the time, we were both working for the state environmental agency (he in pollution prevention and I in strategic planning and assessment), then we had Alexander in the midst of the dot com boom wherein child care was outrageously expensive and ultimately depressing. I stayed home, we had another son, Ethan, and Ken stayed on, until the powers that be ruthlessly began to gut his program. Looking around, he asked if I'd support his seeking a job in Washington. Good supportive wife that I am, I said sure honey, go for it. (I never thought he'd get the job.) Alas, he did of course, and we made the move in December of 2005.
We love living in the Pacific Northwest. As I still have family in Chicago it's possible that I'll come in for the reunion.

"Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
