For twenty years I was economics columnist for The Boston Globe. It was a wonderful paper, very similar to the old Chicago Daily News. The New York Times took possession of it in 2001 and I moved the column online and became the proprietor of a weekly. I still cover economics, in pixels and print (books), and it is still fun, but I work harder for less money than ever did as a newspaperman.
I served in the Navy, worked for a slew of papers (City News Bureau of Chicago, the Keene N.H. Sentinel, Pacific Stars and Stripes, Newsweek, The Wall Street Journal, the Wilmington Del. News-Journal and Forbes. I graduated from Harvard College in 1972, discovered economics, and have been writing about it, in a broad way, ever since.
In 1977 I married Hope Tompkins, of Babylon, N.Y. We divorced in 1994. We have two children, both married: Molly, a history professor at the University of Pittsburgh; and Lucy, the deputy director of public relations at Northeastern University in Boston. Lucy McGowan expects a baby girl in June.
I still go back to Michigan for some part of every summer. I see my brother Stephen in Rogers Park often, Alan (in Alabama) and Kathy (in Berwyn) less frequently. I no longer feel, as I did for many years, like a Chicagoan who works in the East and returns home in the summer. I remain deeply fond of many classmates, near and far.
