these are the priorities Eric and I tried to live by, and each brought us a lifetime of shared blessings that gave us great joy. After being DDECHS high school sweethearts and then being married for 35 years, our life together ended abruptly when Eric died of pancreas cancer in February 2003. He waged a courageous battle against the disease and was at peace in his faith when he passed.
I have continued teaching middle school reading, which I love, but faith, family, and friends are what have brought me through the devastation of losing Eric.
The love and support of our three sons, Brent, Jim, and Ryan; their wives, Shelly, Tracy, and Christina; and the buoyant life energy of our grandchildren (the total as of July 12 is nine) continue to sustain me.
Although many friends have helped me through, I would especially like to acknowledge the treasure of lifelong friendship and the ďlean on meĒ support I received from Cheryl Hibbott Newman who was there when I needed to talk and understood when I just couldnít, and the traveling companions who finally got me back on the road of life again, Dawn Lundgren Gutierrez, Lynne Zakhar Nelson, and Kathy Benjamin Pecaro.
And, as is true in all life crises, when even the greatest human consolation just canít help, when we are in the depths of and utterly alone in our pain, thatís when we notice the Lord is there, and has been all along, to carry us through. And He was there for me.
And now a final thanks to Jimmy Costello, who has opened my heart to not only being among the living, but to rejoining them in spirit as well.
I would like to close with a message from Eric. I found this among his things on a piece of scratch paper scrawled in his own meticulous handwriting:
The past is over
The future has yet to come
Today is a gift
Thatís why it is called
