Jim Womeldorf

After graduating from Luther College I taught high school science at Grand Meadow, MN and at Turkey Valley for a total of 8 years.
After that United Parcel Service saw fit to hire me and I was a deliveryman for 13 years.
A shoe store in Postville somehow beckoned to me at that time and for the next 4 years I repaired and sold shoes.
Back to Luther for a bit and I ventured into the field of computer programming which kept me occupied until my retirement in 2007.
I have been happily self unemployed for the most part since then. Laurel joined me in retirement in 2010.
I expect my epitaph will read 'He never did anything he didn't like for very long'.

In the late 1970s we built an earth sheltered home near the Decorah Fish Hatchery which we still occupy. I often tell folks that one of my fears is that there will be a tornado and I won't be home. The south wall of the house has 9 large windows and the remaining walls (and the roof) are underground.

We have two sons. Brian, our oldest, and his family live 100 feet east of us. David and his family live in the Twin Cities. We spend a fair amount of time going to concerts and sporting events in which the kids are involved.

During three summers I 'worked' as a deckhand for Mississippi Explorer Cruises which is headquartered in Lansing. I was called the 'First Mate' but since there is only one I was also the 'Last Mate'. Our backwater cruises are always enjoyable and usually offer several wildlife sightings.

I also did some volunteering, keeping the website for Decorah Lutheran Church updated, and I helped Bob Anderson a bit with the live video of the now famous (128,000,000 views on ustream.com) Decorah Eagles. Go to RaptorResource.org for information on the great work Bob has done over the last couple decades to bring peregrine falcons back to the Upper Mississippi Valley. We all miss him.

A few years ago I got a hankering to be in a classroom again so I acquired an Iowa Substitute Teacher's License and subbed occasionally at Decorah High School and Middle School attempting to be in control of a bunch of science students. It's a little scary after my 37 year absence but I am enjoyed it for a few years. Lots has changed since the '70s - even the Periodic Table!

During 2015 I build a CNC machine with the intention of using it to drill cribbage boards. I started making boards in December of 2015 and continue to do it when my machine is working properly.
