Today's Featured Biography
Robin Wraight O'Bannon
Joined the Air Force Shortly after highschool in St. Petersburg Florida. Able to serve not just in my primary career field as a dental technician/hygienist, but as a member of the base Honor Guard, a drum captain in the Drum and Bugle Corps, a singer, a field medic, armed security guard and surgical assistant during wartime, a community college instructor, a recruiter, a certified fitness instructor and trainer and more...IT WAS SO AWESOME!
I was married in 1993 and we had two beautiful sons. I was able to serve all of my overseas time before they were born fortunately, but after seven years we were divorced. It seems so simple as I read this in black and white, but I assure you it certainly was not. Very hard in fact. I have never remarried, but I am extremely devoted to our sons. I want to be as good a parent to them as my now deceased parents were to me. They were amazing, simply amazing. Guys, if I can give my sons that, my grandchildren, and their children (and so on?)will prosper...
I became very sick in 2004 with incurable illnesses believed connected to my tours of duty in the Persian Gulf. This resulted in my short notice medical retirement from the Air Force in April 2005. This was a terrible blow to us all after 18 years in service. I think I could have handled just about anything, but losing my health was devastating. My health is what made it possible to serve everyday: my children, my family, my country. I lived to serve others, I still do, so let me say that if you do nothing else, be thankful for the vessel you have been given. Love it, care for it, respect it, it is the only one you have and your health is the most valuable of assets. Off soapbox. LOL.
Since my retirement, I have worked very hard to keep my sons safe, a roof over our heads and food on our table. Within the confines of my health I have slowed down, but never quit and believe me, there have been so many times that I have wanted to, but by keeping a goal in front of me at all times and not forgetting to put God first in everything, I have been able to make it this far. I promise you that there hasn't been a whole lot graceful or pretty about making my way through this journey, but I am still here and so are the boys (woohoo!)I am no stranger to suffering, even at the hands of some pretty uncaring people who were supposed to be there to help (i.e. Department of Veterans Affairs), but I have also been the beneficiary of extraordinary kindnesses that would stop your heart. All in all, I have witnessed unbelievable demonstrations of humanity. All, whether negative or positive, have enriched my life.
I have enjoyed my life as much as anyone else. My greatest gift by far has been being given the opportunity to, no matter how it came about, stay home with my sons in especially critical stages of their development. I am available to them all the time, in a way I never would have been had I still been on active duty. So all things work out don't they? I have slowly but surely worked my own way through school, sometimes doing homework from my "sickbed" while Sean and Pat were doing theirs. I still get sweet opportunities to serve others in extraordinary ways, and I continue to search for a cure for my "incurable" illnesses, because I know that with God, anything is possible. In the meantime, I have to ask myself "What the heck were you thinking when you prayed for PATIENCE crazy girl!"
I swear that this is the short version of my story. I sincerely hope my health is such that I will see you all at the reunion this year, but if it is not to be, know that someone in Gilbert Arizona wishes sincerely and truly that she could be there. Thanks for taking time to read this. Have a great time!!!! Always, Robin
