With great sorrow,...
Robert (Bobby) Shoyer Courtland died unexpectedly in Arizona on April 17, 2016. This trip was one he took annually for business and pleasure.
He will be sorely missed by all the friends he collected through the years with his kindness, generosity, warmth, and overall spectacular personality.
Our sympathies go to his wife Terri, his three children (2 daughters, 1 son) and the rest of his family.

Today's Featured Biography
Betty Thom Nock
My name is: Elizabeth (Betty) Ann Thom Nock
I lived at 6326-32nd Street NW from the time I was born until my husband (Jim Nock) and I moved to the Eastern Shore of Maryland 13 years ago. I attended Lafayette, Deal and Wilson as did our two sons. After high school I went to the University of Maryland where I majored in Business. While in high school and college, I worked during the summers as a secretary for both private business and the Federal Government. Wilson’s classes in shorthand and typing prepared me for that and computer work in the years after college to the present. English, Algebra and Latin have proved very helpful throughout the years as well. Upon graduation from Maryland, I worked for the Department of the Navy, first as a secretary, then as a manager of secretaries, and then as a program analyst computing munitions for NavAir. Jim and I were married at the University of Maryland chapel on June 11, 1966. We had dated throughout high school and college. He had one more semester as he had changed majors, but I had been employed for a year or so. In 1968, we were expecting our first child and the riots were occurring not far from my place of employment. James Nicholas was born in September 1968 and the Department of the Navy moved to Crystal City, several bus transfers from our house (the Metro was not built at that time). The combination of factors led me to resign from that job. Our second son, Ben, was born in April 1971. As each child went to pre-school then on to Elementary, Junior High, and High School, I, too, became involved—both as a volunteer and paid employee. In addition, I did bookkeeping for several small businesses in our area, then worked as office manager for a school for disabled children, and then for a group of psychologists and psychiatrists. As a family, we vacationed a lot in Ocean City, Maryland. We decided we would like to live there in our later years. Well, here we are in our later years. Upon moving here, I worked for the local hospital in the doctor’s billing office, and now am working part-time for an engineering firm. Jim commuted between DC and our home in Bishopville for about 8 years before finally retiring and living here 5 years ago. We are very involved in our church Jim as trustee and in computer work (his career specialty), I am treasurer. The activities surrounding the church and a food pantry nearby keep us very occupied. We do like to travel and have gone on many cruises and are planning a trip to the Holy Land Experience/Disney World in Florida this summer. Our older son is married and has two children—Ian (6), Bailey (3) and lives in Atlanta GA. Our younger son lived for 12 years in Hawaii after college, but came back to “retire” with his father 4 years ago—actually he works for a wonderful family resort in the area and lives 15 minutes away. We are truly blessed—we have a wonderful family, friends and place to live.
