Today's Featured Biography
Lauren Brown
After high school, I married my best friend, Loralee Coker of Class of 1961. I went to work at Mare Island. I did an apprenticeship while she went to college. After she graduated, she started teaching at St. Vincent Elementary and I finished my degree in civil engineering at Berkeley.
After I graduated, we took a couple of years off for the Peace Corps. We had two kids by that time, so it was a unique opportunity for us. Since and before that time, families are not invited. We lived in Ecuador. Loralee taught English and I worked for an agricultural group providing technical assistance to rice farmers.
After the Peace Corps we moved to Petaluma, where I commuted to San Francisco for five years to work as a civil engineer for PG&E. Subsequently I worked for various local government agencies. I retired from the City of Santa Rosa in 2000.
Loralee taught elementary and middle school in the Cotati-Rohnert Park district. She retired in 2001.
We sold our victorian home in Petaluma and moved to San Diego County to be near our daughter Marni and her family.
In 2003 we drove a 1968 VW camper down the west coast of Mexico, through Central America to Panama. We shipped the car to South America where we spent a total of nine months driving back through Ecuador, all over Peru and south through Chile to the tip of Tierra del Fuego. We then came up north through Argentina and Brazil. We shipped the car home from Belem on the mouth of the Amazon.
We recently became school bus drivers for First Student, a private company that provides transportation for the Fallbrook high school district.
Our plan is to travel to Alaska with the VW this next summer.
