Today's Featured Biography
Spencer Rolle
I'm still a Bimini Boy. I have an aerial view of the island on my office wall and a huge afghan map of the Bahamas beside it. Also on my wall is my life verse, "For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future" Jeremiah 29:11.
The memories of St. John's are fond and foundational. From there I attended the College of the Bahamas where I obtained an Associate Degree in Accounting. Subsequent to this, I returned to Bimini and for a few years worked as a night auditor. In 1988, I left Bimini to attended Toccoa Falls College in Northeast Georgia and studied Middle Grade Education. Once again I returned to Bimini and taught mostly 5th grade for six years.
While teaching in Bimini my heart was captured by an Exuma Girl who had come to be the local nurse. Shirlene Bullard and I had a whirlwind romance that resulted in marriage within four months of our first date. In 1996, we moved to Freeport and I taught at Hugh Campbell Primary for one year. The following year my alma mater called inviting me to interview for a teaching position in the Teacher Education Department of the College.
Four months after that call I was teaching a couple college courses to perspective teachers, and enrolled at Piedmont College in Demorest, Georgia to improve my qualifications. For 13 years now I have been teaching education courses full-time at Toccoa Falls College, which is renown for it's 186-foot waterfalls on it's campus, and a dam that use to be above the falls, but broke in November 1979, flooding the campus and killing over 30 people. The school has recovered well by the grace of God and continues it's mission of preparing servant leaders who will impact their world with the love and message of Jesus Christ.
In 2004, Shirlene and I had a miracle son who tipped in at 2lbs 13oz. He spent four weeks in a newborn intensive care unit and came home weighing 4lbs. Spencer Esra is our little blessing, who is now five years old and in Kindergarten. We try to visit the Bahamas as often as we can to maintain that connection to family and friends. It is a delight to be able to connect with former classmates as well.
