Today's Featured Biography

Richard Weinman Weinman

I attended Ohio State University. After graduation I moved to Eugene, Oregon in 1974. While here I studied at the University of Oregon for grad school

I worked for local government for most of my career, including almost 30 years at the City of Eugene Planning and Development Department. I worked on many things and was particularly known for work related to housing and homelessness issues. I retired in 2010 and since that time have been an adjunct instructor at the University of Oregon.

I met Linda Garber at Ohio State and we were married in 1976. We have three kids and one grandson. Two live in Eugene. The youngest, Joey is a teacher, along with his wife, in Thailand. We enjoy traveling. Our son Joey has lived in many exotic places and have visited all of them and also traveled around those areas.

I enjoy long distance bicycle riding (but have been slacking a bit lately). My golden retriever, Rosie, enjoys taking frequent hikes with me. I'm lucky to live in a very beautiful part of the country. I also enjoy attending basketball and football games at U of O (Go Ducks!).

I volunteer with some local nonprofits and I believe we all can contribute something to make our community and world better. I'm quite at home living in a dark blue city in a solid blue state.

Since this is a reunion bio, I just decided to add some highlights since graduation:
- met my wife in 1973 and we have stayed happily married
- we successfully raised three wonderful children
- I'm working hard at being a top-notch grandfather to my seven year old grandson
- I was fortunate enough to save my son's life by successfully donating bone marrow which cured his childhood leukemia
- I've visited at least 17 countries and 46 states
- I took a hot air balloon ride in Cappadocia, Turkey and rode the train to Marrakesh.
- I witnessed a total eclipse of the sun (it was really close to home)
- I rode my bike around Lake Tahoe on three occasions -- one day, 100 miles each time
- I've seen the Rolling Stones a few times - once along with Bob Dylan. I saw the Grateful Dead numerous times and and many other musicians.
- I've become a pretty good amature barista. I make my wife a latte at least once a day.
- I work hard at keeping things in perspective. I know that 'm very lucky and I'm acutely aware that there is a lot of pain and suffering both close to home and in the world. I saw it up close through my work and I see it with family members who, due to circumstances beyond their control, can't get ahead. So, I've tried to do a little extra to help.
