Today's Featured Biography

Nancy Yerry Williams

I was a military spouse until my husband died on active duty in 1986.

I worked for the Department of the Army for 18 years and then took an early retirement to take care of my 2 grandchildren (from my youngest son Bob)as TJ who is now 14 years old was born with serious medical issues. He has DiGeorge Syndrome and Tetralogy of Fallot. The DiGeorge is an immune system issue..the Tetralogy means 4 heart defects. TJ had open heart surgery at 6 weeks of age and will be having another open heart surgery within the next 6 months. My son, his wife and I bought a home together so I could be with TJ as well as my other grandson Jason who was 2 1/2 at the time. We're still all living together. TJ went into cardiac arrest during a cardiac cath at 6 weeeks of age. I promised God that if He would keep TJ with us I would dedicate my life to taking care of him, which I have since that very day that God brought TJ back to us.

As for me, I've also wanted to be involved in counseling but couldn't afford to go to college beyond 2 years. Had I been able to I would have been a Psychologist because I've always wanted to help people.
Currently I do spiritual counseling as I became an ordained minister with a non-denominational church in 2005. I'm also a licensed, certified hypnotherapist with the National Association of Transpersonal Hypnotherapists. I am listed at our 2 local hospitals when patients want to speak with a minister but they aren't a member of any particular religion.

I also work with Hospice and visiting people who are about to go Home is a very spiritual rewarding experience. I usually spend a few hours while the family goes grocery shopping, meets friends for lunch, anything to just get out of the house for a little while. These people are very open with me about their impending death and how they've made peace but it's their family members keeping them here. They have had visits from loved ones and friends who have gone Home who speak to them and tell them they're waiting for them. They talk to them about the tunnel and the white light and when they get to the end all of their passed loved ones and friends will be there to greet them. I absolutely believe them and tell them so because I've had my own experiences which is such a relief to them that someone believes them. They don't even try to speak to their family members about these conversations because they just think their family member is delusional. I've shared some of my own experiences so they understand completely. At the age of 5 my grandson Jason came into my room to tell me that he'd just talked to Grandpa, who died when Jason's dad was only 10 years old so he never knew him. He told Jason to go tell gramma about the yellow roses. Jason asked him what he meant and he said just tell her...she will explain it to you. Before Bob's first tour of duty in Vietnam he knew that he'd be there when I turned 18. Before he left, he went to a local florist and arranged to have 18 yellow roses delivered on my 18th birthday...which they were. And that's what I told Jason..that Bob just wanted to be sure that I believed that Jason was talking to his grandfather.
When TJ was in 1st grade, we used to play around outside while waiting for the school bus. As he was walking up the stairs on the bus, he turned and looked at me and said, "grandpa says to tell you you're full of donkey dust". That was MY grandfather. Whenever we were playing around, he used to always tell me that I was full on donkey dust. Not a common phrase and quite frankly I was stunned when TJ said that because I'd long forgotten it. That was my grandfather's way of letting me know that he was there. I could go on and on about experiences with my husband, mom and dad that I've had encounters with, but I'm sure you get the idea. And depending on your own particular beliefs you may think I'm delusional, but I assure you, I'm not.

I'd known my husband Bob and his brother Tom since I was 10 years old. I never dated anyone but Bob and when he came back from his first tour of duty in Vietnam we got married. We immediately had to leave for Ft Hood TX which is where my oldest son Steve (41) was born. Shortly after Steve was born Bob's unit came up on orders for Vietnam so he went for a second tour there. While there, it was during the TET Offense and as they were taking a hill they were't aware until it was too late that they were about to be overrun by Viet Cong. Bob sent his battalion to the rear and called for artillery fire on his own position knowing that he would most likely die but save most of his battalion. As it turned out, God had other plans. He spent 3 months in a hospital in Yokohama Japan but returned home in pretty good shape. He was truly a war hero and was awarded the Silver Star in an elaborate ceremony (The Silver Star is just below the Medal of Honor)The Medal of Honor is usually only given posthumously.

About 5 years after my husband died I drove up to Poughkeepsie (at the time I was living in South Jersey near Philadelphia) to see my mother in law who I'd always been very close to. (I'd been up there to see her several times, but this time Bob's brother Tom was there.) He'd moved from Michigan back to Poughkeepsie but I wasn't aware of that. We lost touch after his brother died because he really had a difficult time handling his death. I found out later that all the while I was with his brother, he was in love with me but never let on because I was with his brother. We talked on the phone daily for the next couple of years and I realized that I was in love with him too so he moved to NJ and moved in with me. We were together for several years. We ended up in Michigan because Bob (my son) wanted to be near Tom's family and needed a change and had found a good job up there). I ended up taking an early retirement from the Department of the Army and Tom quit his job and we followed them to Michigan. When TJ was born we were told that the best place for him to be taken care of was at Children's Hospital in Philadelphia both for his heart condition and the DiGeorge Syndrome as the doctor who pioneered the research in DiGeorge Syndrome, Dr. DiGeorge did so at that hospital. Also, TJ's pediatrician Dr. Borin had studied under Dr. DiGeorge and knew everything there was to know about the syndrome and he was practicing right here in Delaware about 30 minutes from where we lived. So we bought a home together and all moved in - except Tom. While he understood my need and promise to God, now that he was back in Michigan with his children and granddaughter he didn't want to leave. But he promised me that the day would come when we would be together again because I'd always be the love of his life. Well, next August Tom will be moving here to DE after he retires and we will be back together - this time for the rest of our lives. So life can have happy endings. :)

I'm so grateful for the facebook website for our class. I didn't know a lot of people in school. I knew "of them" but we weren't friends. I only had 3 close friends in high school because I was shy and overweight and not part of the "popular" crowd. How things change when you grow up and leave high school!
I've become close to many of my classmates and we certainly aren't the same people we were in high school. I love the relationships I've been establishing with former classmates and can't wait to see people at the next reunion....and you'll get to meet Tom too!

I don't know what religious views you have or may not have but I did want you to know that I am a Gnostic Christian (Gnostic means seeker of truth and knowledge). I have a spiritual website called Gnostically Speaking where I have a discussion forum that includes spirituality as well as all various religions that are there for discussions. We can learn much from hearing about others religious views. If any of you would like to join, I'd love to have you as part of our discussion forum. Right now I'm in the process of upgrading the forum and I should have it all ready to open back up around Christmas. If you go to www.gnosticallyspeaking.com and scroll down the home page til you see the place where it says "click here" to register. If you'd like to register and come in and look around, if you find you'd like to start or contribute to discussions, I'd love to have you with us. If it's not for you, then you can just delete your membership. But I believe many of you would enjoy the discussions we have. We have lots of boards in there for other things as well...favorite recipes, jokes, etc. Hope to see some of you there. If your registration isn't approved right away it's because I don't have the website open yet but you'll get an email once it is and you're able to log in.

Well, I'm sure I could go on and on, but going through 64 years of life would be a novel not a bio and I think this is already a bit long.

I'm thrilled though that I've gotten to know so many members of our class in a way I didn't while in high school. But I was shy, overweight and not part of the "in" crowd. Well, we don't have an "in" crowd any longer...we all have grown in so many ways and I'm so enjoying getting to know all of you in a way I didn't in high school.

Many blessings to each and every one of you,
Nancy
