Don Levy

Well, did a short stint at the U.S. Naval Academy and in the Navy. Then off to Israel to install electrical generators on the Jordanian border. Got my Associate of Science in Business Management and Bachelor of Science in Accounting at New Hampshire College. Owned a small chain of stereo stores, got married and had two children. Got divorced and moved to Florida. Had a small accounting practice and worked for county government. Met my current wife, a Canadian gal. Then off to Stetson University College of Law. Had my third boy between final exams in my last semester. Got my CPA certificate and admitted to the Florida bar. Had both a CPA and law firm in SW Florida for a number of years. I decided to retire and my wife wanted to move back to Toronto so off we went.

Retirement was short. New vocation, a consulting a firm offering U.S. international tax planning and compliance services to professional firms whose clients need cross-border tax services whether north or south bound. Founding director of the American Chamber of Commerce in Canada (AmCham Canada), vice-president and Chair of the Ontario Chapter. Past Exceutive Committee member of the Republicans Abroad Canada (RAC) and if that was not enough I just completed my certification in mediation services so I'm developing a new business in that growing field.

No grandchildren yet. My youngest is just getting ready to graduate from the University of Toronto and he is deciding to either go to grad school and then law school or skip grad school and go directly to law school. I guess I have got to keep going for a few more years.

In between everything, I developed my photographic skills concentrating in black and white and taught photography classes. I still use a medium format camera as my tool of choice.

I have not been back in Portsmouth since a visit in late 80s. The city had changed quite a bit from my youth. I still have family there. Rene and Gary Levy who own the State Street Discount House, one son and my ex-wife Darby (f\k\a Jenkins, PHS class of 68) and some cousins.

I do miss Moes Sandwich Shop, never found a better sandwich anywhere.

Update 11-10-2011
Well, it has been an interesting time recently. Last August I was found to have colon and liver cancer. 1st had chemo and radiation then, colon surgery that got botched and I spent 4 months in the hospital; touch and go for awhile. Now getting ready for a 2nd surgery then 2nd round of chemo and then a 3rd surgery. Hopefully, that will be it. Sadly, it has forced me into retirement from my practice just when because of new government regulations many others are getting out and I had a chance to grow the practice substantially. Well, that's the way the ball bounces. On the plus side, I now weigh what I did when we graduated. I had been wanting to lose weight for years and to celebrate the decision would start eating everything in sight.

My youngest son decided to go in a different direction and is now in his last year of the accounting program and he will track to become a Chartered Accountant (equiv to a CPA in the States. I never encouraged it as a vocation for him suggesting he continue to law school as I did after getting my CPA but, he seems to really like the number crunching and tax so I guess the apple did not fall far from the tree.

Sorry I missed the reunion but I had only been recently released from the hospital and was in no condition to travel as at the time I could barely walk a few steps. I hope all had a really good time.

Update 12/3/2013: Oldest son is now a professor at McGill University while middle son work for the Blue Boys Group designing and building a number of their rather interesting instruments and more recently provides services to musicians related to staging such as performances of the likes of Bon Jovi. He also builds guitars as a hobby and has given me my 2 grandchildren. Youngest is prepping to take his accounting certification exams so, I have an interesting mix of gene results.

Ongoing medical issues have kept me close to home allowing me to catch up on decades of reading that has backed up for decades. Starting to some client related projects including corporate restructuring reviews and international investment planning. No more stress related tax seasons for me.

Some years ago I had a pet dog, a resume greyhound. What a couch potato and scared of even a small bug. Died at 12 years old and I decided not more pets. Well last winter a black cat started coming into the back yard and eventually came into the house to use the facilities and eat. She had a litter that we trapped and adopted out and she came in with them and stayed so, now I am learning what the differences are like between living with a dog and cat. What a difference. Seems I am continually rescuing things like wounded birds, mice, guinea pigs and even a skunk. Thankfully, Marlene is very understanding and passes it off as living with a little boy with a propensity of bringing home a frog in his pocket continually.

I have not done much photography. Film and development services up here are getting quite scarce and expensive. I have a dslr but being old fashioned it just is not like shooting a load of black & white film.

Well, have a Happy Holiday, everyone.
