After graduating from NC State University in 1963, I married our classmate Carolyn Rentz, who graduated from Queens College that same year. We had two children (Catherine and Michael), and they gave us five grandchildren. Our life together lasted for nearly 43 years until Carolyn died in March 2006 while we were traveling in Barbados. Carolyn's life was intertwined with the lives of our children and grandchildren, and we all continue to miss her greatly.
Professionally, I completed the PhD degree in physics at NC State University in 1969 and accepted a position as Assistant Professor of Physics at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA. I progressed through the ranks and in due course became Professor of Physics. Eventually I became Chair of the Department of Physics at Old Dominion and was privileged to lead that department for 12 years while it significantly increased in size and stature in the international physics community. I retired from my faculty position in June 2008 and continue my association with the university through an emeritus appointment.
Since retiring, I've spent some time traveling and as much time as possible with my children and grandchildren. I've also indulged my interest in fly fishing, an activity in which I'm still struggling to be worthy of my equipment.
