Today's Featured Biography

Roger Parker

This profile is way too long and I didn't even get into the inevitable "review of systems" that comes with advancing age. Feel free to know that I am alive and well, and will see you all in August, and then stop here.

After graduation I went to college and graduated from the U. of W. School of Nursing in 1964 (BSN) and graduate school in 1966 (MA in psychology and psychiatric nursing). I worked my way through college and graduate school with the aid of some generous scholarships. I eventually ended up working in mental health in Denver, Colorado in a fantastic experimental mental health program. I was active with the Colorado Nurses Association and, among other things, chaired its Economic Security and General Welfare Committee and was elected a national officer in the American Nurses Association (ANA) which was then headquartered in New York City.

Through my work with the ANA I became acquainted with the Big Apple and was eventually recruited to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) here on the eastside of Manhattan where I have been since 1975. MSKCC is the largest, oldest, and best known free standing cancer center in the world. We have about 14,000 employees and focus all of our efforts on controlling and curing cancer. We have a very large research program with many distinguished scientists on our staff. We also have a large clinical program with over 1000 full-time employed physicians on our staff.

My work at MSKCC has been incredibly challenging and rewarding. I was in charge of the nursing program from 1975 until 1982. In 1983 I became the Senior Vice President and Hospital Administrator for Memorial Hospital for Cancer and Allied Diseases, our clinical facility.

In a Kramer v. Kramer situation with my former wife I assumed custodial responsibility for our two kids and they grew up with me here in the Big Apple. When they were on their own I decided to go back to school and graduated from law school in 1997. I am now the Executive Vice President and General Counsel here at MSKCC, and I am admitted to the bars of New York, New Jersey, as well as Federal Courts in the Southern District of New York and New Jersey, and the United States Supreme Court.

After getting out of the navy, starting and stopping college more times than I can count, my son now lives in Riggins, Idaho (Hell's Canyon) where he is a white water rafting and steelhead fishing guide, chef, and would be musician. He is the senior rafting guide with "Exodus" if you are in the mood for an exciting ride look him up. He and his long-time girl friend spend their time doing what most of us have to retire to do.

My daughter is a registered nurse and lives in Winside, Nebraska where she works and is busy raising my two beautiful granddaughters.

For the first 12 years of my life I was married to a member of the opposite sex and for the last 30+ years I have been partnered with a member of the same sex. It took me a long time to figure myself out and I'm still a work in progress. My partner, Paul, is a retired investment banker and we live in Brooklyn and Southampton, New York. We have dogs and cats, and yards, and friends and family to keep up with and it seems as if there is never enough time.

My brother, John, also Class of '59, now lives with our sister in Klatskanie, Oregon. He is separated from his third wife. His second wife died of cancer. His son, Gary, lives and works in Wenatchee, and his daughter, Trish, lives with her family in Wenatchee also. Trish is an oncology nurse and has four children. John's first wife, Dorene, Class of '58, also lives in Wenatchee where she retired after a long career as a critical care nurse at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle. John is retired both as an enlisted officer and civilian employee from the US Army. His health is poor and he will not join us in August.

John had a major stroke about 10 years ago. He had the best of care at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio where he worked and recovered fully. Later he had a cardiac arrest and barely survived. He has been through cardiac rehabilitation.

Enough of my rambling . . . See you all in August. If you visit the Big Apple, look me up. I'm good for at least one drink and a bite to eat . . .
