Jim Smith

Upon graduation from Southwestern University in 1965 I moved to Corpus Christi and began teaching at Northside Junior High. In September 1966 I met Cathy Culbertson, and we were married in March 1967. In September 1967 I accepted a teaching position at Pasadena High School, and we moved to Pasadena. In 1968 I received my Masters of Education degree from the University of Houston. I was named assistant principal at Southmore Intermediate in 1972. 1980 brought another job change as I was named principal of Miller Intermediate. I remained at Miller until 1995 when I was named Director of Transportation for the district. My first retirement came in 2002 after completing 37 years in the education profession.

I began to get restless about a year after retirement, and I went to work as funeral assistant at a local funeral home. This was a very rewarding job as I was helping families through a very difficult time. I had to officially retire in 2013 to take care of my wife who was battling cancer. After the removal of both kidneys and the bladder she is now cancer free. Cathy passed away in 2021 as a result of dialysis complications and heart issues.

Cathy and I are fortunate to have our daughters living about 20 minutes from us. One daughter lives in League City and the other in Pearland. We have four grandchildren, a boy 15, and three girls (ages 10,6, and 3. I am active in activities at South Main Baptist Church, and enjoy home improvement projects, working on cars, and taking care of the church vans.

In March 2008 I received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Pasadena Independent School District.

On March 3, 2011, I was inducted into the South Houston High School Hall of Honor.
