Muriel Robinson Simpkins

After graduation from DuPont High in 1961, Muriel attended the University of Tennessee, Belmont College, Tennessee Tech, and Peabody College for her pre-law studies. She received her Bachelor of Laws degree from the Nashville School of Law m 1968 and received her Doctor of Jurisprudence degree in 1971 from the same school. She was admitted to practice in 1969 and was also licensed to practice before the Supreme Court of Tennessee, the United States Federal District Court, and the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati.
Muriel was engaged in the general practice of law for 14 years in the law office of Jack Norman, Sr. before her election to the bench. Her practice consisted of many areas related to the domestic relations practice.
Judge Muriel Robinson is Judge of the Fourth Circuit Court in the 20th Judicial Circuit serving Davidson County, Tennessee. She was elected to her circuit judge post in 1982 and is the first woman to be elected by popular vote into a court of record in Davidson County.
She is affiliated with Phillips-Robinson Company Funeral Home of Nashville and is a Licensed Funeral Director of the State of Tennessee and was legal counsel for Phillips-Robinson prior to her election to the bench.
She had served on the faculty of the Nashville School of Law for 20 years and was the first woman to serve on their faculty. Judge Robinson has served as Presiding Judge of the 13 Trial Courts of Davidson County, being the first woman elected to the position in Davidson County as well as the first woman in the State of Tennessee.
Muriel was voted Nashville’s Most Favorite Judge in the 1993 Tennessean’s Readers’ Choice Awards honoring Middle Tennessee’s Favorite People, Places and Things. Judge Robinson was named one of Nashville’s 10 most Powerful People by Business Nashville Magazine in April 1994 and again in April 1995. She was listed by the Nashville Scene Magazine on March 30, 1994 as Nashville’s favorite Judge having been chosen by vote of the readers of this weekly publication in the “Best of Nashville Reader’s Poll” in 1995. In 2002 she was named one of Nashville’s 25 Most Beautiful People by Nashville Lifestyles Magazine who solicited nominations from its readers and subscribers.
Muriel is married to Irby C. Simpkins, former publisher of the Nashville Banner newspaper
