Today's Featured Biography

Rodger Hoffman

I spent the first year after high school at Bucknell wondering what I was doing there. The summer following that year was a wonderful experience as a lifeguard at Rolling Green Park. All those Red Cross swim lessons and life guard training paid off in one of the greatest summers ever. The fun continued with an end of summer major road trip around most of the South and Western parts of the United States with my good friend and fellow adventurer, Dr. John O'Brien, in his robin's egg blue MG-A. We went from Sunbury to Florida where we were chased out of Miami by hurricane Donna (1960) on the way to the Keys to try to get work on a fishing boat. Maybe Donna was a good thing for me. We wound up going through Texas and then to Anadarko, Oklahoma where we were chased out of town by a bunch of indians who did not like our car or our Bermuda shorts. Fun summer. We made it home broke but no worse for wear.
After this trip it was back to Bucknell for another semester and then I left there and joined the Army. Best thing I ever did. After basic training at Fort Benning, GA., I trained as a Medical Lab Technologist at Fort Sam Houston, then back to Ft. Benning-Martin Army Hospital for on-job-training and on to the 2nd Infantry Division, 2nd Medical Battallion. We were a field hospital (like MASH) but fortunately never saw wartime service, although we were on full alert and ready to go to Cuba during the missle crisis. I spent most of my time TDY to the lab at Martin Army Hospital and was finally transfered there. I did not realize how large a role this 3 years of Army service would have in my life.
During the almost 2 year period at Fort Benning I met Peggy, who was teaching art in the schools in Columbus, Georgia. We were married just before I shipped out to France and she accompanied me on our year long adventure in Europe. We lived in Chinon , France where I was attached to a NATO Hospital. We traveled all over and greatly enjoyed our time there. Came home in May 1964 with baby on board. I was discharged from the Army and moved to my wife's home town, Birmingham, Alabama, taking a job at St. Vincent's Hospital Lab. Our #2 boy Paul, was born here. I attended Walker College for one semester and transfered to the University of Alabama for my final two years. I graduated in 1967 and got a job with Scientific Products Division of American Hospital Supply Corp. as an "S/P rep" ( Scientific Products representative) and moved to Jacksonville, Florida. We lived in Jacksonville for 12 years, adding to our family Meg, Betty, and Billy- all born in Jacksonville.
I transfered to the Dade Division (a laboratory diagnostics manufacturer in Miami, Fl) of our company and moved back to Birmingham in 1979 where we have been ever since. This company morphed into several different other companies but I stayed with them until 1998 when I retired from DADE BEHRING after 31 years. This was a very exiting, progressive technological era for the clinical lab, science and business taking giant leaps to better serve patients and identify their medical problems. I was very proud to be part of the progress made in the laboratory diagnostics area.
My wife Peggy was a stay at home mom, doing what I think is the most important job in the world, until our youngest started school. She then went to work and got her Masters in Special Education. She proceeded to teach visually impaired kids for 17 years, retiring 3 years ago. She is a very special person and I am really happy she puts up with me.
On a personal and family level, I have enjoyed many different forms of recreation and family fun. We spent a lot of time at the beaches in Florida and my kids got involved in baseball, soccer and scouts, where I was a Cubmaster and Scoutmaster. We also participated in many church activities. Also, we traveled all over that fine state.
I have been a motorhead since I can remember and this got me into motorcycles after a brief fling with sport cars. I have done a lot of things, skydiving, scubadiving, motorcycle touring, motorcycle and car racing and I finally retired from Kart road racing when I was 50 years old. I have also enjoyed hunting and rifle and pistol shooting. I loved them all, but now I really like to ride either my Triumph Tiger or T100 Bonneville motorcycle over back roads at a brisk pace and savor the smells, sights, and sounds of the Alabama countryside and the feel of a throughbred machine under my control. I also volunteer at the BARBER MOTORSPORTS MUSEUM as a docent and do tours and work events several times a year-next year we will have the INDY cars for a race in April! This is a world class facility here in Leeds that houses the largest collection of motorcycles (700+ on display) and Lotus race cars (41-today) in the world. An incredible facility with a 2.3 mile road course adjacent to the museum. Come visit us!! This is like heaven for me-I can't believe this is here!!
Just recently we got a Sea-Doo GTX "personal watercraft" for our grown grandkids to use at the lake house that goes like hell and I am wringing that monster out on Smith Lake every chance I get. It is fun. Top speed is 60 mph.
We have 5 children, all married, all college graduates and they all live right here. We see them routinely. In fact one or more of them stops by for lunch every day. All are good citizens, gainfully employed and they do make us proud. They have given us 12 grandchildren, all of them spoiled rotten, and we love them too much. They range in age from 20 (a boy and a girl) to 10 months (2 boys). They are a work in progress. They all are here or at the lake house for most holidays and sporadically when time permits in their busy schedules. Plenty of action here!
In summing up my life to this point, I feel very fortunate and lucky to have the wife and family I have and to have enjoyed a successful career, a good marriage, and many exciting and interesting experiences and hobbies.. Also the wonderful people I have met and have had the honor and pleasure of knowing make life a real treat. We have not been without our "speedbumps" on life's highway but I thank God for everything, everyday.

P.S. My epitaph: "He was fun while he lasted".
