Artwork displays state's talents
An annual exhibit featuring the artwork of New Yorkers returns this weekend to the Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center.
“Made in NY,” an exhibit of 73 works by 58 artists selected by judges from an applicant pool of hundreds, will open Saturday, March 27, with a free artists reception and award presentation the following day. The exhibit will be on display through May 16.
“The interesting thing about it is that it's very different from year to year,” said Donna Lamb, the art center's executive director. “There's a lot of variety in the work.”
This year's artists were selected by judges from 282 applicants who submitted 544 works. The selected pieces represent a range of media, including oil paint, pencil and photography. Lamb said this year's exhibit includes more sculpture than previous years.
Most of the exhibit's artists hail from central and western New York; a handful live locally, in Cayuga County.
Moravia resident Fred Price's photograph titled “Fort Myers Lights” will be among the works featured in the exhibit.
Price, 72, got his start in photography almost accidentally. He was working, in his words, as the lowliest of lowly clerks on Wall Street when an acquaintance approached him in a coffee shop and asked if he would be interested in a job as a photographer's assistant. (The acquaintance had told the photographer he'd pick someone off the street who could do a better job than the photographer's current, useless assistant, Price said.)
Price's photo that will be on display was taken while on a dinner outing to one of his 92-year-old mother's favorite seafood restaurants during a trip to visit her at her home in Florida. The photo is representative of Price's aesthetic - uncluttered, with an emphasis on color and shape, composition.
Most photographers go about taking pictures either with technique in mind or with composition in mind, like an artist, he said. To describe his approach to the task, Price compared the process to jazz improvisation.
“At any point in the song you have a tremendous selection of possible notes you could play. How do you know which is the right one? It's the jazz truism of 'if it feels good, it is good,'” said Price.
“You're walking down the street with the camera around your neck and you stop because something catches your eye,” Price continued, “and you try to eliminate everything except that impulse that made you stop and look.”
Other local artists whose work will be featured in the exhibit include Marcus DeVoe, Jessie Reich, both of Auburn, Kate Timm, of Sterling, and Brett Scheifflee and Lana Purnell, of Aurora.
