Today's Featured Biography
Barry Marsh
2012 – “My son graduated from Vanderbilt with a Civil Engineering degree in 2007 and is now working at Vanderbilt as an assistant director of an Engineering program after, working in Arlington, TX for 4 years. I retired from Teledyne Brown Engineering in 2009 and have traveled to Okinawa, Japan this past October. ------------------- HISTORY ------------
2002 - Communications Manager for Teledyne Brown Engineering, Retired from USAF 1983
I recall I only talked to one other person from Whitmer since I left the Toledo area in January of 1963. That was Bob Hume from the class of 1963 while he was going to school at Ohio State.
I dropped an enlisted in the Air Force at the end of February. I needed to gain some maturity. I spent twenty years and one month in the Air Force and retired as a MSgt in October 1983.
I was a Personal Specialist during my first four plus years and worked at Lockbourne AFB, Ohio. I finished my enlistment with an 18 month tour of Okinawa. I separated from the Air Force, but reenlisted some 7 months in Pennsylvania.
The rest of my Air Force career was spent in computer operations. I was 18 months working inside Cheyenne Mountain in Colorado Springs, Co. I took leave and returned to Okinawa to be married. We processed paperwork for about two weeks so we could both return to Colorado.
Back in Japan (for 4 years)I support passenger and cargo transportation. Upon return I was assigned to HQ Strategic Air Command in Omaha, Nebraska and worked underground. We spent 5 miserable winters in Nebraska and were finally reassigned to Seymour-Johnson AFB, NC.
We bought a house and expected to be in the area for a while, but I was sent to Korea for a 12 month unaccompanied tour. My father passed away in April of 79 so my wife stayed with my mother in Huntsville.
I spent the remaining two years working at Data Systems Design Center. The work involved providing programs and field assistance to Air Force bases world wide. I was the leader of a training team that spent 30 days conducting training at bases in England, Italy, and Germany. The overall effort would be comparable to what would be a super help desk for the entire Air Force. We were using the ARPANET network that has evolved into the internet.
Upon retirement in October 1983 I relocated to Huntsville, AL so we could help my mother. I returned to school at the University of Alabama, Huntsville (UTAH) and used the GI Bill and scholarships to complete a BS in Management Information Systems.
I completed my undergraduate degree with honors in December 1987 and the three of us returned to Okinawa for a visit with my wife's family.
We returned to Alabama and I started graduate school at UTAH. I also started with company Teledyne Brown Engineering doing database prototype development.
I worked in the Facilities Department and assumed the responsibilities of voice communication manager, facility's information systems, and facility drawing's maintenance and design.
We have finally found a place to become involved in the community after all of the years moving around. My wife, and I have become involved in volunteer work in Huntsville. For 3 years helping the Grissom High School band raise money.
Their band program averages around 190 members with 3 concert bands. 425 students and family to the 1999 Macy's parade. Since my son is graduating in 2003, I expect to be working for a while to pay college expenses.
I was looking at our year book the other day
and noticed that my head has finally grown large enough to fit my ears.
