Today's Featured Biography
William Svarda
Bill Svarda graduated from the College-Conservatory of Music of the University of Cincinnati in 1963. From 1963 to 1969, he taught high school music at Fenwick High School in Middletown,Ohio. While teaching, he worked nights at Suttmiller’s Theater Restaurant in Dayton, Ohio, playing trombone in the house band.
While teaching and playing, he wrote arrangements for many types of bands: high school and college bands in Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky, etc., dance bands of all sizes, vocalists, and for publication.
After moving to Los Angeles in 1975, he taught instrumental music in nine elementary schools in the LA area, and taught at College of the Canyons for four years before becoming music director at American Martyrs Church in Manhattan Beach. At this time he worked as a transcriber for music publishers, including: Sparrow Records, Maranatha! Music, Word Music, GIA, and
International Liturgy Publications. During this time he also worked as a proofer for feature films at Jo Ann Kane Music.
At present he is still Music Director at American Martyrs Church, and still engraving and transcribing at International Liturgy Publications in Nashville.
TROMBONE: Has played for night clubs & concerts: Sonny & Cher, Gladys Knight, James Brown, Engelbert Humperdinck, Carol Lawrence, Joan Rivers, George Carlin, etc. Bands: Buddy Morrow, Woody Herman (one nighter), Ralph Marterie, etc. Ice Shows, Circuses, Rodeos, Symphony Orchestra, etc.
ARRANGING: Over 500 arrangements for marching bands & stage bands. Over 1000 arrangements for choirs.
PUBLICATION: Forty-Four compositions for concert band, marching band, drum & bugle corps, and ensembles, five masses that are now in use, Book of Psalms “Waters of the River,” and a CD – “This Bread, This Wine.”
COMPOSITIONS: “Journey of Sorrows,”(cantata), CDs – Jazz Light 1 & 2, "Christmas for Family & Friends," plus 75 – original songs and octavos, and 3 musicals with lyricist-Ginny Kelly.
