Today's Featured Biography
Jim Watling
After graduation from King, I attended Ohio University, graduating with a BS in 1990. I was awarded a graduate associateship, so continued on there for my MBA, which I received in 1992. During the spring break in 1992, my class travelled to Bangkok, Thailand to do a joint study project with students from Bangkok University. While there I was offered a position as a marketing instructor in the International Program, which is delivered in English.
I accepted the position and really enjoyed living in the tropics, a great change - by the way, I don't own a coat! I stayed in Thailand, Bangkok, mostly, but I have also called Samut Prakarn and Hua Hin home, for nearly 10 years. I was offered a position in Chongqing, China in February 2002 and left Thailand to accept that position.
I didn't really enjoy China and spent only two and a half years there, mostly teaching English as a Second Language. The Chinese, while being better students than the Thais, just aren't nearly as friendly and have a huge problem with honesty. I left Chongqing for the US in August 2004.
I lived back in Lorain for about 14 months in an effort to spend some time with my family, many of whom had forgotten what I looked like. Employment was difficult to find as there aren't a lot of opportunities in higher education in the US for those without a terminal degree. I did make it back for that snowny winter of 2004 after not seeing snow, or even freezing temperatures, for more than 12 years:(
I was again offered a position in Bangkok by an old boss, so I returned to the Land of Smiles in October of 2005. I am now working in administration for Naresuan University's Bangkok Campus. I work with the two programs delivered in English, an MBA and a Master's of Arts in tourism and hotel management that we offer here. I will also get a chance to get back in the classroom eventually.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone the best. I won't be making it for the 20th reunion as I was just there a few months ago.
