Today's Featured Biography
Joan Wilsterman Hall
College, it seems like so long ago and yet, I wouldn’t want to repeat it. After graduating from Hoban, I attended Kent State. Since I waffled between several majors…it took me seven years to leave the place. I finally graduated with degrees in science, architecture and interior design. While at Kent, I lived at home to save money. When I graduated, I felt the need to really “make it on my own”. I left Ohio for Hawaii with a three week return ticket. My plan was if I could find a job in my field in three weeks, I would stay – if not, I would return after a great vacation in paradise. I managed to get a job with two interior designers, so I stayed.
While on a beach, reading a John Grisham novel, a handsome man sat down on my towel and asked me out. Going against all conventional wisdom that says not to trust strangers I did go out with him. Not only that, but I married him eighteen months later. David Hall is my perfect match with the mind of an engineer and the creativity of an artist. We have been happily married for nine years.
We left Hawaii together and moved to Colorado where David worked as a first grade teacher and I as an architect. After our first daughter, Svea was born, we began to realize the importance of extended family and our isolation in Colorado. We had quite a choice to make, we could move back to Ohio, where I was from, or move back to David’s hometown – Anchorage, Alaska.
We decided to move to Ohio, but we visit David’s family in Alaska nearly every summer. I was eight months pregnant with our second child when we drove a moving van across the country.
Our second daughter, Brigitta, was born five days after we arrived in Akron. She was six weeks early and had to stay in the hospital nine days.
We have been back almost four years. I am a stay at home mom who is trying to summon the courage to market her artwork. David is the computer teacher at Immaculate Heart of Mary School in Cuyahoga Falls.
Last year we decided to have one more baby…little did we know what we were in for. I ended up in the hospital at six months and our third (and last) daughter, Annika, was born on March 4, 2005, eleven weeks early. She weighed 2lbs 11oz. and was only 14 inches long. She remained at Children’s Hospital for seven weeks and came home on oxygen and a heart monitor. She is a beautiful, healthy, happy baby now and we are so thankful she is a part of our family.
My husband and I bought my childhood home and invited my parents to live with us. Our daughters are literally being raised in a four parent multigenerational household and receive plenty of love and attention. I can’t imagine how traditional two parent families get by.
