William Cahill

Upon graduation, I entered Boston University; however, into my second semester I began to wonder why. Walking down a Boston street one day. I saw a model of the SS CONSTITUTION (a passenger ship) in a travel agengy window and thought that thats what I really wanted to do. The next year I started at Maine Maritme Academy and seemed to find my purpose in life. I met my future wife my junior year at MMA in Vallies parking lot in Kittery, ME. We started a long distance relationship as she lived in Michigan. Face with an uncertain future and having no money, we did the logical thing on graduation, we got married. Two weeks later, I found myself on a merchant ship as a brand new ships office sailing for India. Thirteen month later I was called to active duty in the Navy and Missy and I were heading for San Diego, CA. to joint the crew of the USS Morton (DD 948) We didn't have long together when the ship left for operations in Vietnam. On return, 7 months later my first child (Anne) was born. This was great but shortly after this wonderful event I learnd that I would be returning to Vietnam but this time as part of the Riverine force in the Mekong delta. Survived that but decided that the Navy wasn't all that bad and stuck it out until I retired in 1993. I then started to work with the Maritime Administration (U.S. Department of Transportation) in Washington, DC.

I am still working at the Maritime Administration but really thinking about retirement soon. Missy and I celebrated our 44 anniversery this year so we have survived those early uncertainties. We have 2 grand children (Sarah and Megan) by my daughter and we were blessed as my son and his wife just had healthy twins in July after several disappointments(boy and girl). As my mother passed away four years ago my only attachment to Portsmouth is my sister in Greenland.

As I saw my profile featured on the site, figured it was worth a quick update. The reunion was great and I wish to thank those who worked on the committee. I saw a lot of friends I haven't seen in many years and missed a few I thought would be there. Following the the reunion, Missy and I spent a wonderful day at my sisters camp in Maine. My niece, her husband and 3 boys were also there for the day. A big lesson learned for me was not trying to compete with my 13 year old nephew while water tubing. I hung on quite well but felt a little left behind when I looked over an saw him standing on foot while making a high speed turn.

Hope all are well and will see everyone at the next reunion.

"Thank you so much for doing this. I appreciate it" 7/21/2017

"We had our 50th reunion in June. It was a great success in large part due to the creation and use of the Classreport web site. Of our 379 classmates, we've located 322 and confirmed another 46 are deceased. We've had 7,900 hits in less than a year. Thanks for making available a great product that we will continue to use!" 7/14/2017

"My name is Debbie and I'm a teacher. I came across your page while searching for information about genealogy for an upcoming student project. The resources you have are very helpful! I just wanted to thank you and thought you should know how useful it is as it's made collecting information a lot easier." 7/11/2017

"Y'all Rock!" 7/11/2017

"Just want to send you a huge 'thank you' for your awesome website! Using this website has been such a blessing and an ease in creating name tags for our reunion and just having our classmates keep in touch. We had the best 50th reunion with the most attendees ever! This class of ours has had a reunion every 5 years since graduation. Not sure if we will have another one but the website will keep us connected. Again, thank you for this awesome website." 7/10/2017
