Today's Featured Biography

Judy Smith Lewman

After one year at Stephens College in Missouri (horses!), I transferred to Colorado but soon returned home with mono and later enrolled at the U of M. In 1962 I married a super cool guy I’d met the previous summer at Peggy Schmitz’s slumber party (a friend of Peter’s). After attending school in Florida and Seattle, John and I returned to Minnesota in 1964 and ended up back at the U where he finally graduated with a daughter on each knee and I came dangerously close to receiving a degree in interior design.

In 1967 we moved to a small farm in Minnetrista where we learned to butcher chickens, shear sheep, milk goats, rope steers, heat with wood and race sled dogs. John was an independent contractor in commercial real estate and I stayed home with the kids, volunteering at their schools, for the Children’s Home Society, church, etc., and serving on the Hennepin County Fair Board. John and I were also 4-H leaders for several years and once designed and built (and sold) a house for fun.

In 1970, having learned to weave and with homegrown wool on hand, I imported a few spinning wheels from New Zealand (cheaper in lots of 5) and sale of the extra wheels morphed into a fiber arts supply business. Being the first in the country to market spinning wheels by mail order, we soon had a 20-page catalog and customers in 50 states as well as overseas. It was a real kick, but the business was sold in the late ‘80s after our captive work force left for college and my interests had shifted to ovine health issues.

Today, mostly retired, John still does some consulting and we both keep busy on the farm. Lisa, graphic designer/stay-at-home-mom, and her family live in Montana—fun place to visit but quite a hike to see the grandkids. Dana, who once worked for Mark Merrill’s firm and has recently returned to Minneapolis after several years in New York, is a freelance artist making props for theaters and museums. John and I enjoy books and travel, and I also volunteer for an education/support group dealing with the sheep version of HIV/AIDS (www.OPPsociety.org). Life is good!
