Ollie Burns Knight

Mrs. Ollie M. Knight, MSW/ACSW currently serves as the Interim CEO of Human Resources Development Institute, Inc. (HRDI). HRDI is one of the nation’s leading behavioral health and human service organizations. A long-time veteran of the organization, Mrs. Knight joined HRDI in 1979 and has served in many capacities of the organization from case management supervision to senior administrative positions. A graduate of Loyola University in Chicago, it was, in fact, Mrs. Knight’s alma mater that tracked her early career and provided the referral for her initial management position with HRDI.

Mrs. Knight’s dedicated, prestigious career in social work began at Lutheran Child and Family Services, providing individual, play and family therapy to children who were emotionally challenged and under the service mix of Lutheran’s Mental Health and Programming Service area. After two short years in her chosen profession, Mrs. Knight accepted the position as HRDI’s first Director for Dual Diagnosis Programs, supervising the case management component for the mental health and substance abusing population. In this position, Mrs. Knight was also responsible for the supervision of the state’s first therapeutic day schools, the Nicholas Barnes Therapeutic Day School.

During her illustrious tenure, Mrs. Knight has played a pivotal role in HRDI’s national expansion plan. By invitation from Mississippi Congressman Bennie Thompson, HRDI’s President Emeritus and Co-Founder, Ms. Doris M. Lomax, appointed Mrs. Knight as HRDI’s first National State President. Responsible for developing programs and services for the rural Mississippi Delta, one of the poorest communities in the nation, Mrs. Knight was immediately successful in initially establishing four key programs – a Families First Initiative to provide supportive services to families throughout the Delta communities; the Fatherhood Initiative to assist custodial and non-custodial fathers garner employment to take care of their family; and two programs geared towards non-adjudicated youth, the Intensive Youth Services and the Adolescent Offenders programs in 2000. Less than two years later, Mrs. Knight was successful in securing one of HRDI’s first federally-funded initiatives under the auspices of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) for 5 years. The grant, funded by SAMHSA’s Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, supported a residential substance abuse treatment service program that provided HIV/AIDS services for adult African-American women and up to two of their children between the ages of 6 months and 10 years.

Her work throughout the Mississippi Delta has not gone unnoticed by other community-based service organizations. Mrs. Knight serves as a consultant and strategic planner to numerous mayors in Mississippi, and serves on the boards for the Metro Council in Jackson, Mississippi, and the Cross Roads organization in Greenville, Mississippi. She is a board member of the Southern Institute for Mental Health Advocacy, Research, and Training (SMHART) at Jackson State University-College of Public Service School of Social Work. Nationally, Mrs. Knight’s professional affiliation includes the National Association of Social Workers, The National Association of Black Social Workers-Chicago Chapter, The National Council of Negro Women-Metro Jackson Section, and she is also a member of Eta Phi Beta Sorority-Alpha Lambda Chapter. She previously was a member of the American Board Examiners in Clinical Social Work (Board Certified Diplomat). Currently a member of the Forensic Association of Social Workers, Mrs. Knight is also the Co-Founder of the Minority Recruitment Committee of Loyola University’s School of Social Work, and a previous member of the school’s alumni Board. In addition, Mrs. Knight is a member of the National Alliance on Mental Health – NAMI Illinois. Mrs. Knight has presented numerous papers on Mental Health and Substance Abuse at national and international conferences. She co-authored a paper “Sisters of Survival: The Post-Substance Abuse Treatment Experiences of Rural African American Women in Mississippi”, a paper from the 5 year HRDI/CSAT program. Mrs. Knight also served as a research assistant on a behavioral study: Ego-Functions (The Borderline Syndrome) at the former Illinois State Psychiatric Institute in Chicago.

Mrs. Knight has extensive experience in leading non-profit foundations. In 2004, she was appointed by members of the Human Resources Development Foundation, Inc. (HRDF) to be the Foundation’s first President. In this role, she took responsibility for the fiscal management of HRDF’s cadre of endowments and resources. Mrs. Knight was also responsible for HRDF’s internal and external fundraising events such as the Club 100 Luncheon, Client Theater Night, and Seeds of Africa Gala. The success of these events made it possible for the Foundation to provide an annual Thanksgiving and Holiday dinner for HRDI clients; to give gifts to each client at this holiday dinner; and in the summers, to host a youth prevention summer camp for HRDI teens. Additionally, under Mrs. Knight’s presidency of the Foundation, she produced HRDF’s first annual report and marketing video to solicit new donors. Adding to her credentials, Mrs. Knight was also the past president of the Roseland Hospital Auxiliary Board, a position she held for two years.

As part of HRDI’s succession plan, Mrs. Knight now serves as the Interim CEO of the organization, responsible for the administrative operations of all HRDI programs. Combining her vast experience throughout the organization and professional skill set, Mrs. Knight provides the management oversight for the fiscal, purchasing, corporate relations, and human resource functions of the organization.

Mrs. Knight holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Roosevelt University in Chicago, a Master’s Degree in Social Work and Casework from Loyola University in Chicago, and a certification in Business Administration from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Mrs. Knight has many certificates of accomplishments from her work in the Hospice community. She keeps her skills honed by taking on-going continuing education classes in administration. She is married to her lifetime friend (James) and the mother of three professional daughters (Millicent, Monica and Melody).
