If you live in the East, you have to look up to see the sky. Here it is Big Sky country, with the horizon visible in all directions. Chadron is home to a state college, lots of cowboys shop here, as do thousands of Sioux Indians from the nearby reservation. It makes for interesting political discussions. We are on the main highway to Yellowstone National Park and Old Faithful. Mt. Rushmore and the Black Hills are a short drive north. The museum where I work tells the fascinating story of commerce between whites and Indians from John Smith to the reservation storekeepers. (Ever wonder where they got all those beads? And guns? And blankets?)
Besides the astonishingly beautiful scenery, and many interesting people, we have ranching, timber cutting and a uranium mine nearby. And every 15 minutes, 24-7 all year, a mile long train hauling a million pounds of coal passes through to plants that furnish you electricity and generate carbon dioxide to warm the global atmosphere.
I travel a great deal, especially Canada and Mexico, as well as Europe and the US. My job is as a writer/editor and I've written 15 books, including a Mountain Man coloring book and a frontier cookbook. My wife (from Chevy Chase) and I live in the oldest building in the county, built as a stage station, post office, and saloon for the early ranchers. We have 2 kids and four grandchildren. Love to all, Jim Hanson
