Today's Featured Biography

Carl Simmons

Wow! I have to first thank God for still being here while a many of my friends have already passed away. Several years ago, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. I did not have to take time out from work while going through radiation treatment. I did not have an invasive and highly painful surgery. The Doctor's at Brigham and the Dana Farber were caring, patient and provided excellent service while I was going through the treatment. Now the doctor's are monitoring me every three month with the hopes of being "cured". I am a cancer survivor.

My wonderful boss was not so blessed. Wini Crawford, a black woman only 54 yo, just last year was taken by pancreatic cancer. I watched her go through it and I cried many times. She was also a friend. A friend said to me that she worked hard all her life and she never even got to collect a social security check. I am thinking about the R word. Yes, retiring before I am 65.

Well, as of this update, retiring at 65 is only a pipe dream. The medical insurance is going to be a financial burden alone. Never mind the eyes and teeth.

Although my mind says I am 30, my body is keeping it real at 58 and is tired more often and I can not do everything I used to do. I am excited for life but work is draining me. Younger, more vital and energetic, highly motivated folks who have a different sense of what it means to be successful are invading the workplace. It is time to think about the next phase of life, thank God for his great blessings, and hold on for another five years to collect my first Social Security Check.

The soundtrack of my life is still Motown, soul 60's and 70's rock bands, and now I love me some Il Divo; MJBlige, NE-YO and a handful of country artists! I went to the Diana Ross concert in Boston last month and it was full of older folks like myself dancing in the aisles to all her old tunes. I needed an oxygen tank by the end of the evening. After the concert we walked to the back door of the CitiWang Theatre, where she eventually came out and all I could do was stare and take pics.

I am going to Worcester in two months to see her again. This time I am in the third row right side and will be taking, hopefully, awesome pics to someone I have loved since 1963. My inner teenager is still alive and well.

I was thinking of some of our teachers from that time. Mr Cook, my math teacher is one who inspired me to excellence, has retired. Back then he seemed older than God, but he really was not older than his 20's. Doris Newton, my French teacher who tried to help me in the language lab, but I just did not get it. I now wished I had the vocabulary to tell her my ears were plugged.

My brother, Barry Simmons, was more into HS than I was. For xmas a couple of years ago, I purchased a brick in his name. He said that was the best.

Sharon High School shaped my life and although, I did not feel that way then, I do now.
