Bobby Ashmore

It has been a minute…

I have last had contact with Eric Canagy back in ’84 after I got out of the Navy.

I’ve lived all over since then and had many jobs including a stint on an oil rig for a time… oh, and let’s not forget the year on a lay/down pick/up machine waiting to land the job off shore. Since then I’ve worked in construction, in retail management, as a bouncer and an administrative assistant, a medical transcriptionist, etc.

I haven’t had what I would call any real measure of professional success; however, all the life experiences have been invaluable.

I’ve learned not to judge others… not even when it’s convenient. I’ve learned to stand up for myself without tearing down someone else. Most importantly, I’ve learned that I absolutely need and revel in as much grace as I can get, regardless of who is offering it.

Being at relative peace in the world is a miraculous thing. The beauty lies in not having to try to find the beauty. Everything and everyone gives our time in this life real value.

I laugh to myself every time I get distracted while writing so I’ll ask for some of that grace I spoke of!

I suppose there is no real reason that anyone would remember me with the exception of my size perhaps. I believe, at the time of my graduation, I was 6’6”, 185 lbs. I did play basketball with a fantastic bunch of guys though my skill did not catch up to my body for another year or two.

I was a troubled kid and as is common with folks like me I acted out, got in fights, discounted the respect that I now understand is deserved. I am sure half the class will not remember and of the few who do probably half of them don’t remember me fondly. Such is life. Just know that if we had fun I had great fun and if I did you wrong then I feel the pain of those slights as I ended up being rather emotionally intelligent and empathetic if the smart people who’ve told me so are to be believed.

I had a serious heart attack a couple of years ago and am now living with heart failure. I’m so blessed to be marrying my girlfriend of 13 years and in if I’m lucky I will have 12 to 15 years left to revel in this life. My perspective has shifted from me focusing inward to a fascination with the journey ahead. I no longer think of the end of my life as an unknowable impossibly large thing to contemplate but rather a trek with a definite end and as such I am reveling in as many moments as possible.

Not the end.

My favorite mantra, if you will, currently is ‘until further notice, celebrate everything!’
