I have lived on a ranch and farm in rural Wellsville since 1971 when my late husband, Merle Haas, and I married and moved to have a place for my horse and his airplane. He passed away in 1998 after a nine-year battle with cancer. We reared three sons, Brett (Tonganoxie, KS), Shane (NY, NY) and Ty (Lawrence, KS).
I married Gene Broers in 2007 after his wife of 42 years passed away. We both believe our union was a match made in heaven, as neither of us had intentions of remarriage after seeing our spouses suffer through long-term illnesses. Our Lord and Savior changed our minds four years ago. We met through square dancing in 2003. We have 5 adult children and 11 grandchildren between us, spread from coast to coast.
After graduating from Shawnee Mission East High School, I completed my education at Midwest Stenotype Institute and received certification as a Certified Shorthand Reporter by the State of Kansas. I was employed as a freelance court reporter for eight years in the Greater Kansas City area with the exception of a 3-year period, during which time I traveled and lived in San Francisco, Lake of the Ozarks, the Bahamahs, Washington, DC and Los Angeles.
My late husband and I owned and operated Haas Electric & Security for almost twenty years near our home. After his passing, I sold the customer base, and I then worked as the Executive Secretary at Miami County Medical Center in Paola for seven years before retiring. I am currently a Line Dance Instructor/Cuer with the Kansas Square Dance Callers Association. I keep busy teaching line dancing occasionally and cueing for two square dance clubs, plus participating in association dances. Even though Gene and I retired, we own and operate three farms, raise horses and operate a hay business in our spare time. We enjoy riding our horses, traveling the U.S. and boating and swimming during the summer. Running has been a means of fitness for me since the 80ís, and I enjoy competing in 5K races, even though Iíve cut down races to a couple a year. I taught aerobic dancing for several years when my children were small.
Gene and I are active members of the Wellsville Baptist Church, where I serve on the Board of Christian Education, sing in the choir, teach Sunday School and lead Precept Ministry Bible studies, among other activities. I sang alto for several years with a Christian, womenís trio.
At our 40th Class Reunion I was reacquainted with Antoinette Baubion Daniels and discovered she was living outside of Paris, France. My son Shane and I were planning a trip to Switzerland and France, and she invited us to stay a few days with her when in France. It was one of the highlights of our trip. Other than Antoinette, contact with former classmates has been only through our reunions.
Iím looking forward to seeing some former classmates at our 50th SME Reunion.
