Today's Featured Biography
Carolyn Lengel
After high school, I went to McPherson College for 2 years (spending a semester abroad in Marburg, Germany), then moved to New York in 1981. I sang in three punk-rock bands--Killer Instinct, XKI, and Bad Tuna Experience. From 1986-91 I tended bar at Downtown Beirut Bar in NYC and was voted Best East Village Bartender by a local newspaper in 1990.
I went back to school at Hunter College of the City University of NY in 1991, planning to go to medical school, and was pre-admitted into Mt. Sinai College of Medicine as part of a program at Hunter. But after graduating from Hunter in 1994 I decided to follow the money and go to grad school in English instead. After three years in the Ph.D. program at the Graduate Center of the City University of NY, I jumped ship and became a freelance writer, working mainly on textbooks and the occasional article or music review.
In 2004 I took on a full-time, salaried job for the first time ever in my life (!) and became a senior editor for college English textbooks at Bedford/St. Martin's. Five years later, I'm still at it. I work in the office in NYC three days a week and at home two days a week. It's nice to know that understanding grammar can still win somebody a job!
I still freelance occasionally, but now my main topic is always the same: Bollywood. I am a huge fan of Indian movies and have visited India with my family twice in the last three years. My daughter and I are trying very hard to learn Hindi.
Mike Enright and I got married in 1989, moved to Putnam County (about 50 miles north of NYC) in 1997, and had our daughter Harriet in 1999. We got married the weekend of the 10th MHS class reunion, and Harriet was born the week before our 20th. This August it's her tenth birthday and our twentieth anniversary! I won't be at the 30th reunion, either, as we just visited my mother in McPherson over the July 4 weekend. Hope you all have fun.
