Couldn't leave Park Ridge fast enough after college (Trinity/Deerfield, IL, BA in 77). Needed culture shock; sure found it in Vermont, going from urbane suburban to washing-machine-on-the-porch rural. It almost rubbed off on me and I still won't wear flannel.
81-present: Information Technology. From propeller-head to IT director at different stops and shops along the way. Currently CEO of StauderTechnology. Which sounds much better than the pedestrian reality of being a self-employed contractor delivering IT consulting services and training. Yeah, CEO. I like that. On the road constantly, US, Europe, Caribbean. Yeah, anywhere but Massachusetts.
2 wives, 3 kids. Sequential, not parallel: no polygamy or twins. First wife=Diana; the second was (is) Diane. Only had to change one letter on my checks. My child support checks.
In New England since I left college; in Massachusetts (where the drivers are Massholes) for 10 years. Whenever work brings me to Chicago (a few times a year) I drive the old streets, which to me have been desolate since 73. Lahon, Prospect, East, Sylviawood, Greenwood, Western, Rose, Redfield. Sometimes I wonder where everybody went... Now we know. To an extent.
And I've often thought how cool it would be to gather together significant people in the same room, 30 years later... Bob, John, Milo, Kathy, Tim, RJ, Nancy, Elaine, Jay, Craig, Lee, Ann, Bob, even Gary, Debi, Cheryl, and... certain others...
But wait! That would be a reunion, wouldn't it.
Which I toyed with attending until a gig in London removed the option… where I shall hoist a Guinness in the fondest memory of those of you were and even are dearer than you'd imagine.
Cross my path. Email me! Email rekindles relationships. It's not a fire you can cook on, but the warmth is nice for awhile.
