Today's Featured Biography
Stephen Wingett
I am a veteran educator of some twenty eight years. All of my teaching career
has been in the Idaho public school system. I am a big man, with a big heart,
and a even BIGGER sense of humor! I love to teach, to educate, to inform,
and yes.........to have fun!! Elements of all of the parts of my personality and
who I am are evident (if you read between the lines that is) in the lessons
that make up the course you are about to take.
As far as being qualified to teach, please consider the following information
as evidence that proves that I AM QUALIFIED!!!
In my youth....I grew up. While I was growing up in Walnut Creek California,
Salt Lake City, Utah, and mostly in Boise, Idaho (where I now reside), I
decided that I wanted to be a teacher. After graduating from Borah High
School in 1970, I went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from Boise
State University. My degree was in History, with a minor in English. The
summer of my graduation from college, I married a Boise, Idaho native. Her
name was Rebecca Jackson, eldest daughter of a retired major league baseball
pitcher named Larry Jackson. He ran for the Idaho governorship in 1978
and I thought I might get a job in "politics". But alas.......he did not win
so, I stayed a teacher!! In the next seven years we had four children;
twin daughters, another daughter, and a son.
I started my teaching career in my minor field of study (English) at Middleton
Junior High School, in the little town of Middleton, Idaho. After one year I
moved to the Meridian School District. That was 1976. Our district had one
high school then. It has six today! Three "traditional" high schools, two
"alternative" high schools and one "technology" high school. The Boise/Meridian
area, according to Rand-McNally, is the third fastest growing community in
America!!
For the past eleven years I have taught history at Centennial High School.
In 1985 I earned a Masters' Degree in Curriculum and Development from Boise
State University. The emphasis of my project was in geography and culture.
Because of my interest in the "world", so to speak, I have traveled five
times to Europe on student educational tours. This traveling gave me an
interest in world and geographical studies. When the Meridian School
District decided it was time to create a new required course about the world,
I jumped at the opportunity to participate. "They" only had a title, for
this brand new required course for high school graduation. It was called,
GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES, so......Mike Corbett, Jeff Hoseley and myself
wrote the darn thing!! This is now the fourth year of its existence and it was
re-written in the summer (2001) and also updated in the summer of 2002
so it would be more in line with the Meridian School Districts new “concept-based" curriculum
