Edward Blakely

EDWARD N. BLAKELY, JR. Executive Profile

Ed Blakely was born in Santa Monica, California and raised in Hawaii. In 1965, following graduation with a degree in Telecommunications from the University of Southern California, he joined the Army serving as a Special Agent for Army Intelligence.

After leaving the Army in 1969, Blakely worked as a director and assistant news producer for a local Washington, D.C. television station and in 1971, joined the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) as Director of Incumbent News Services and later became Advertising Director. During his years at the NRCC, he built and ran the NRCC's successful in-house advertising agency and production.

Blakely joined the Alexandria-based advertising firm of Smith & Harroff in 1985 where he produced and directed scores of television commercials for corporate issue campaigns and political clients. He also was a senior member of the agency team that trained corporate executives, elected political leaders and government officials on how to improve their public speaking skills and how to communicate messages with the greatest impact when interacting with the media.
In 2003, Blakely joined Maryland Governor Robert Ehrlich’s administration as the Director of the Governor’s Department of Strategic Communication. His duties included a re-branding effort positioning state government to reflect the goals and image of Governor Ehrlich. As a part of this process he conducted a communications/marketing/advertising audit of each major state agency to find out what they do, why they do it, who is doing it, and what is being spent.

One outcome of this effort was the creation of a “virtual” PR and advertising agency for the state, run out of the Governor’s office and using the talent and production equipment that existed throughout state government. Whether it was a video, a banner, website, speech or a brochure, projects were produced using state employees and state equipment thus saving the state thousands of dollars that would have otherwise been spent on outside contractors. Blakely also managed all major events for the Governor.

Following the defeat of Governor Ehrlich, Blakely was given a presidential SES appointment to the General Services Administration where he was named the Associate Administrator of the Office of Citizens Services and Communications. This 150 person office was divided into two parts with the Communications Office providing services in the areas of marketing; video production and editing; graphic design; speech writing; media relations; and events management. The Citizen Services half managed all information channels between the citizen and the federal government including two major Web sites, USA.gov and its Hispanic counterpart GobiernoUSA.gov, phone, email and publications. The office also provides services to federal agencies such as call centers that may be needed in times of emergencies as well as collaboration services to facilitate IT related interaction among federal, state, local and even international governments.

In 2010, Blakely returned to work for Bob Ehrlich producing his campaign YouTube videos. He also managed all of Ehrlich’s major events. In 2011, started his own video production business focusing on providing quality videos at low cost. Today, most of his time is spent producing videos for the Anne Arundel Medical Center, a hospital located in Annapolis, Maryland.

Blakely and his wife Leslie reside in Annapolis and are the parents of two grown children and grandparents of four.
