Today's Featured Biography

Louis Charles (Butch) Graziano II

Having attended military school prior to transferring to THS, I was lacking one credit to earn my high school diploma. Instead of graduating from THS with my classmates, I joined the Marine Corps. My friends Larry Russell, Arthur Myer, Vince Marshall and I all from Thomson went to boot camp on the “Buddy Program “at Paris Island together. After boot camp they sent the four of us in different directions.

I made two tours of duty in Vietnam where I was wounded on three different occasions outside the Khe Sanh Combat Base. Consequently, I spent 16 months in different medical hospitals receiving various surgeries for my injuries. I received two purple hearts and nine combat awards which resulted in my receiving a medical discharge from the Marine Corps.

The first of three of the awards read as follows: The Commanding General, Third Marine Division takes pleasure in commending Lance Corporal Louis Charles Graziano
II 2140755/0311 United States Marine Corps for “Meritorious achievement during the period 26 February through 2 March 1967 while serving with 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion in the Republic of Vietnam. Lance Corporal GRAZIANO was a member of an eight man reconnaissance patrol that made contact with a large force of North Vietnamese Army soldiers. This contact provided the early warning that aborted an enemy attack on Cam Lo, Republic of Vietnam. The battle initiated by this patrol has accounted for nearly one thousand enemy killed and was the most significant action of Operation PRAIRIE II. Lance Corporal GRAZIANO was an indispensable part of the eight man team. He selflessly contributed his professional skill and courage to the exceptional success of the entire patrol, and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Marine Corps and the Naval Service.” – B. A. Hochmuth, Major General, U.S. Marine Corps Commanding, March 30, 1967.

The second award reads as follows: Department of the Navy this is to certify that the Secretary of the Navy has awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal to Corporal Louis C. Graziano II United States Marine corps for heroic achievement while serving as an Automatic Rifleman with Company I, Third Battalion, Fourth Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On the morning of 20 May 1968, Corporal GRAZIANO’s squad was assigned to probe a North Vietnamese Army force occupying a defensive perimeter southwest of the Khe Sanh Combat Base. As the Marines advanced toward the hostile emplacements, they suddenly came under intense small arms fire. When his squad subsequently commenced a withdrawal, Corporal GRAZIANO resolutely delivered accurate suppressive fire upon the hostile positions, enabling the Marines to move to the relative safety of their company’s perimeter. Although his squad was greatly outnumbered, he unhesitatingly volunteered to participate in an assault against the North Vietnamese emplacements. Fearlessly advancing across the fire-swept terrain, he directed a heavy volume of fire against the hostile soldiers and threw numerous hand grenades into their positions, forcing the enemy to flee in panic and contributed significantly to his squad accounting for eighteen North Vietnamese soldier confirmed killed and five captured. By his courage, aggressive fighting spirit and steadfast devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger, Corporal GRAZIANO upheld the finest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.” Corporal GRAZIANO is authorized to wear the Combat “V” - Given this 20th day of May 1968- H.W. Buse, Jr. – Secretary of the Navy.

The third award reads in part: Department of the Navy this is to certify that the Secretary of the Navy has awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal to Sergeant Louis C. Graziano II United States Marine Corps for “While serving with Company I, Third Battalion, Fourth Marines, Third Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam from 29 May to 31 June 1968. Sergeant Graziano performed his duties in an exemplary manner. As a Squad Leader, he displayed outstanding leadership and initiative despite extremely adverse conditions and difficulties of a combat environment. Participating in numerous major combat operations, including Operations Scotland II, Kentucky and Napoleon/Saline, he repeatedly distinguished himself by his courage and composure under fire. Constantly concerned for the combat readiness of his unit, he tirelessly trained his men and molded them into an effective fighting force. Sergeant Graziano’s leadership, outstanding professional ability and steadfast devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself, the Marine Corps, and the United States Naval Service. Sergeant Graziano is authorized to wear the Combat “V” - Given this 31st day of June 1968 - H.W. Buse, Jr. –Secretary of the Navy-Lieutenant General, U.S. Marine Corps Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force, Pacific.

One of my most memorable moments while in Vietnam occurred when John Wayne walked into the medical ward where I was recovering and sat on my bedside and talked to me for approximately 30 minutes about his westerns, horses and research for his movie “The Green Berea”.

After returning home I married Bonnie Gayle Smith of Thomson. After obtaining my GED, I attended South Georgia College in Douglas for one year before transferring to Tallassee Community College for two years while my wife attended Florida State. Bonnie received a B.S. in Mathematics with a minor in Psychology in only three years. When Bonnie got accepted to Emory Law School we moved to Atlanta where I joined the Atlanta Police Department and became a Mounted Horse Patrolman. During this time, I played 3 years of semi pro football for the Atlanta Police Department. We traveled around the country (New Orleans/ New York) playing different police department teams. After 5½ years Bonnie and I divorced.

In 1977, I resigned from the Atlanta Police Department, to attend the Michigan School of Horse Shoeing. I became a Blacksmith and Ferrier where I shod horses for the public for a total of 28 years. During this time, I also had a horse & carriage service at the Telfair Inn in Augusta, GA. Through the years, I have been involved in many horse related actives: Head Wrangler for the Georgia Film Commission in Atlanta(which included 8 motion pictures and 14 T.V. commercials that involved providing horses, wagons, buggies and period piece equipment for the film industry); Summerville Tour of Homes in Augusta, GA; Gold Train (one of five ferries that the state of GA hired to shoe saddle horses & wagon stock that crisscrossed the state for 6 ½ weeks to raise money to (re)gild the capitol dome in Atlanta); Manger of Equestrian Center at Harbor Club in Greensboro, GA; Horse Rentals; Dude Strings; Carriage Weddings; riding programs for Girls Scouts & 4-H at my farm; and horse quality hay production and sales.

I married the love of my life, Pamela Malcom Graziano. Pam has been an educator for the past 22 years. She is currently the counselor at Norris Elementary School in Thomson. Hopefully, Pam will complete her doctorial dissertation in Education in Leadership and Administration from Georgia Southern this fall.

I have two sons Gus (23) and Matthew (19). Matthew is a sophomore at Georgia Southern living in Statesboro. Gus is a Master Scuba Diver in the Navy living in Maryland. Gus just recently married Tara a future school teacher from Mississippi.

Currently I enjoy farming (good quality horse hay)and working with my horses.I am looking forward to re connecting with everyone soon.
