Today's Featured Biography

Becky Warren Hayes

Your most memorable moment(s)at BHS:
- We all will probably list the JFK assassination.
- Beyond that I remember Senior Day and the Latin Club trip to Rome.
- What a wonderful experience! We had so much fun -- and I have pictures to prove it!!!
-  A small event that makes me smile every time I think about it involved a substitute teacher for Mr. Dannaway’s Latin IV class. During class an announcement came over the loud speaker telling all band members to report to the band bus. Without any pre-planning or foreknowledge of such an announcement that day, we (there were 7 of us) glanced devilishly at each other, quietly packed up our books and walked out of class. The sub had no idea that none of us were in the band. We had to stifle our laughs until we got to the end of the hall and then figure out what to do with the rest of the class period so we wouldn’t get in trouble.

Your most harrowing/embarrassing experience:
During a fire drill my second floor classroom exited the building down the front stairway to the school lobby. I slipped and fell on the stairway causing my skirt to ride up so that everybody could see my garter belt (we wore them with hose back then) and underwear. I was only a sophomore, extremely modest, and very aware of which cute boys in my class probably witnessed my embarrassment. Such a scene would be no big deal today but at age 15, I was totally humiliated.

What kind of trouble did you get yourself into?
- I was such a Goody-Two-Shoes that I never got into any real trouble. However, Chris Evans and I would drive across the Pennsylvania state line to some little quick store and get a bum outside the door to go in and buy us beer. We never got caught.
- Also, on the eve of Senior Day, I (again with Chris Evans) still in white dresses from a choir concert, sneaked over to Mt. Pleasant HS and wrote “Yeah BHS 65” in blue paint on the side of the building. We didn’t get caught doing this either but I worried all night that somebody had seen us and would report our license tag number.
- The last week of school before graduation, I smoked one cigarette in the girls’ room in the hallway near the band room just so I could say I did it. I just had to do something BAAAAAD before leaving high school.

- [Ed note: Not getting caught doesn’t mean you were a Goody Two Shoes, Becky!]

What was your overall impression about high school?
I loved high school but was eager to move on and see the world. I realized that we attended a superior public school and were “college ready.” Writing everyday for Miss Galloway’s Senior English class was torture but I thank her everyday now. We had some wonderful teachers.
