Your most memorable moment(s)at BHS: Most memorable are teachers and classmates. In recent years, I reflect on the serious Christian influences, such as Cross Country coach Dave Curtis and fellow student, Randy Elliott. While at the time, I had no appreciation for their faith, I look forward to meeting up with them someday! There are others that were friends in school, but went on into the ministry. Bruce Cook and Randy Ross come to mind.
Of course, the nerd set aka "The Triumvirate" of Jim Wason, Mike Toomey and yours truly, along with "The Myth" Joseph Willing.
Your most harrowing/embarrassing? experience:
What kind of trouble did you get yourself into? Senior Day for the class of '65 was terminated by Dr. Jenkins after several classmates were discovered drunk or passed out at the church adjacent to Brandywine. My parents were attending a dental convention in New York at the time. When they called home, they said they'd read about the hijinx in the New York Times!
I passed this along to classmates and soon the New York Times reference became a topic of concern on WDEL.
Upon their return home, my dad told me they'd heard about the BHS senior day from another dentist who had a student at Brandywine. There was no New York Times article.
I called into the radio show and informed them that the New York Times article was a hoax.
This was long before a simple Google search would have debunked the rumor. So much for my dad's sense of humor!
What was your overall impression about high school?
What's happened in the years since BHS: UofD BS Chemistry, 1969
Albert Einstein College of Medicine, MD 1973
AECOM/Bronx Psychiatric Center - residency training completed, 1976
Learned to teach Transcendental Meditation 1976-78.
Moved to Dallas, Texas 1978. Practiced psychiatry 1978-2004 - First medical director ELDER Geriatric Psychiatry program with Dallas County MHMR.
1979-84-Joined faculty, Southwestern Medical School , where I served as Director of Medical Student Education for Psychiatry as an assistant professor.
1984-2004-Private practice, public sector, locum tenens. Last few years of practice were locem at Dallas VA hospital and finally as a civilian contractor at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio in 2004. That was the last time I worked for pay.
Big change in 2001, when I came to know Jesus Christ as savior and lord. A growing awareness that serving as a "high priest of secular humanism" as a psychiatrist became increasingly incompatible with my faith, although through 2004 God demonstrated his sovereignty over various psychiatric afflictions, from substance abuse to PTSD. Patients were made whole in amazing instances right in front of me, whenever I would introduce the gospel into the therapeutic dialog. This caused some degree anxiety among clinic administrators, despite benefit to patients and enthusiasm among believing staff.
Returning from a trip to Israel in 2003, I met my current (and final) spouse, Marilyn. Neither one of us had any inclination to marry again (#3 for me & #2 for her); however, through a series of signs and words of knowledge, we were married 8 months later!
By God's grace (and Marilyn selling her home in Seattle at the peak of the market), we've been happily retired since 2004.
I enrolled at Dallas Theological Seminary, studying Church history and eschatology in a non-degree format, which finished in 2012. I've kept myself busy teaching classes in churches and participating in Christians United for Israel (CUFI), traveling to DC to meet with our Congressmen and Senators.
We're living 35 miles east of Dallas in Poetry, Texas (about 10 miles NW of Terrell) on 6 acres in a home and with a faithful wife neither of which I deserve. We have a small flock of 6 chickens (fresh eggs) and 2 goats.
We're blessed with good health and ample provision. We are called to be ready, faithful and watchful for Christ's return. With the "glorious darkening" of our world, we are charged in Luke 21:21 to look up as our redemption draws near!
