Today's Featured Biography
John Hankins
After graduating from NHHS I went into the Navy to see the world, and sure did, sailing through the Mediterranean and then thru Panama Canal to the West Coast. A Pacific cruise followed ending up in Vietnam where I was on junk patrol. Did a lot of SCUBA diving during that time.
After being discharged in San Francisco, I came back to Connecticut for a summer but left to live in the Bay Area to start my writing career at Oakland Tribune. Relocated to Santa Barbara to attend UC-Santa Barbara (English-Drama degrees) and became a stringer for LA Times and Time Magazine, specializing in covering the war protests.
Settled in Santa Barbara from 1966 through 2001 when I moved to Ojai and then Ventura. During those years I established my own news business which included a news clipping service as well as reporting.
I covered major news events, specializing in environmental, political and feature writing.
I also continued acting in numerous plays, which I continue to do and had the extreme pleasure this year of being on stage with my son and granddaughter in "Ramona Quimby." My acting career is wide and varied, and some of my favorite characters include Sherlock Holmes, the burned-out professor in "Educating Rita," various characters in the musical "Annie," "1940s Radio Hour," "Our Town" and a rash of English comedies and Neil Simon plays.
I was a widower for a number of years, then met Suz Montgomery of Ventura and we got married in 2009. She is a political activist and adult education teacher while I continue to write in sort of a 'semi-retirement' mode.
I am currently editor of the Sierra Club's newspaper for the region "Condor Call" in which I am known as Condor John cuz I'm an endangered species.

Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
