Today's Featured Biography

John Baker

After Organ Grinder closing in 1987 I was at a loss of what to do.
I went to Texas A&M (GO GIT EM AGGIES!! WHOOP!) and got my associates degree in Computer Science. I also got my masters in Music. But nobody was hiring for anything music at the time.
I worked for Star-Tek out in Aurora, who had an AOL tech support contract. AOL monitored all calls and heard my way of dealing with customers. They called the main desk and talked to me about moving to 2 locations, OKC or Ogden UT. I chose UT.
From there I was employed for 6 months before they fired me. I think it was fixed.
From there, I moved to Salt Lake (40 miles away) where I went from call-center to call-center trying to fit in.
Finally after about 8 years later I got sick of being looked down upon because I was not LDS (Latter-Day Saint) and my break came. PHOENIX!
I was in Phoenix for about 6 months and someone from the organ group here found out I was living here and told one of the owners about me. I got a call from him and asked to audition for him. I asked him what he wanted to hear and he said ", I don't care, so long as you dazzle me." He went to the back of the dining room, folded his arms and watched as I rode up on the stage playing "I've Got Rhythm" After I was finished I turned around. His mouth was wide open and he said "YOU'RE HIRED!"
Been working for Organ Stop now for 8 years. Love doing what I do! 5 years ago I went back to school and learned how to work on pipe organs as well.
Today, since Theater pipe organs are complex yet everyone is so mystified by them, those of us in the trade know where each pipe organ went from where it used to be and the history of that pipe organ. You might even wonder where the organ went that used to be at Organ Grinder. Some of it is at Organ Stop now. Some of it is in people's houses. (Yes people have pipe organs in their house), and the main console (the thing we played on) is somewhere in England now. Some rumors say it's been taken apart, others say it caught on fire.. but the one I like to think is true is that it's somewhere in England still being played and being taken care of.
I look forward to making this a better page for you to use since I am the admin for Sheridan's class of 88. Please feel free to ask any questions or comments, and even suggestions. After all this is your page too.
-John-
