Today's Featured Biography

Merritt Hemenway

After Amat High School I attended St. Mary's College of California with Robert Hughlett. After St. Mary's I was hired at Amat (1968)to teach Geometry. Taught math for several years. Was named boys' counselor at Amat in 1972 and Vice Principal in 1975. Named first lay principal at Amat in 1981. Served until June 1990 when I was asked to move to Cantwell High School in Montebello. Oversaw the consolidation of Cantwell and Sacred Heart of Mary High Schools in 1991. In 1994 I moved to Orange County to become the second principal at Santa Margarita Catholic High School in 1994. Served there until 2002 when I moved back to Amat as Principal until my "retirement" in 2012.

After retirement I was asked to serve as Principal at Damien High School when a vacancy occurred mid-year. I love it and continue in my third year in that role. While at Amat in 1984 we were recognized as a National School of Excellence, precurser to the Blue Ribbon Schools Program. At Santa Margarita we also were named a Blue Ribbon School in 1998. That same year I was named California High School "Principal of the Year." Nice trips to Washington DC for each of those awards!

Ruth and I were married in 1970 after having met at the Bishop Amat Fiesta in October 1969. We are blessed with five wonderful children and now Judi has three children and Mary has two giving us five grandchildren to spoil. And we are good at it too!
