Victoria Pike Pynchon

A wild ride & a satisfying one, now slipping into a lower gear with more books, more friends, more family and less rock 'n roll.

The ultimate unusable Lit Degree from UCSD in '75 took me to New York with Peter Pynchon (hence the last name) where I worked in the typing pool of a mid-sized Manhattan law firm, spending my lunch and after work hours drinking in my still-favorite city in the world. I was just blocks from the Museum of Modern Art, Fifth Avenue (Tiffany's!), Central Park, Broadway, the whole shooting match and I thought I'd died and gone to heaven, even though I was spending 8 hours a day watching that silver IBM ball turn reams of blank paper into patent applications, legal briefs and "demand" letters.

Back to California for law school (Davis, '80), four years of practice and then a slight bail out (teaching at Cal State Northridge for two years) before coming back to practice again, now 22 years of it (!!!!), the last 15 of it in downtown Los Angeles.

New'ish (3 years) husband bestowed upon me two wonderful grown step-children, both of whom I adore and one of whom works for me (Adam) while awaiting word on his own law school admission ("and don't think I won't blame YOU," says he).

Steve and I just purchased a sweet 1928 Spanish house in the midst of what passes for urban Los Angeles (near the Beverly Center for those who know the area) and we are happy and content, both working too hard but also enjoying travelling, gardening, movies, family, and slowly fixing up the house!

I returned to my love of literature in the early '90s, taking fiction writing classes through UCLA extension and have been writing (and publishing) short fiction, essays and poetry ever since. Cathy Scott ('66) by the way, is a much-published author, beginning with the "Killing of Tupac Shukur," and I am so proud of my old friend, Cathy, who lives in Las Vegas and pounds out the books with alarming frequency.

If you'd asked me in 1970 whether I'd have a happy life, I'm certain I would have said, "are you KIDDING??? pretty unlikely."

The intervening years have been challenging and filled with joy, hard work, love, loss, the whole shebang.

My parents are still with us and I have a lovely neice, now at University in Canada. Life couldn't be better.
