History of Williamson (formerly Maysville School) |

The following is copyrighted material, and used by permission of Author, Shawn A. Bivens, and taken from her book, Mobile, Alabama’s People of Color: A Tricentennial History, 1702-2002 (2004)
The history of Williamson reveals a story of academic excellence, athletic prominence, and music genius, as remembered by those who know of her, and especially by those who are touched by that majestic heritage, and call her Alma Mater.
In 1894, the Mobile County Public School System opened The Maysville School for elementary students of color. MR. GEORGE HALL, residing on Dublin Street in Maysville, was hired as the first principal. The school, originally located on the corner of Virginia and Lott Streets, served grades one through six. Hall remained principal until his death in 1911.
That same year, MS. LOUELLA BANKS was appointed the second principal of the Maysville School. Ms. Banks was replaced after a short period by the third principal, MS. LILLIE BEACHAM WILLIAMSON.
Ms. Williamson was a community activist; member of State Street AME Zion Church; and served as Vice-President of the first Mobile Branch, NAACP, Incorporated, in 1919. Additionally, Ms. Williamson was a member of the Women’s Twentieth Century League; and was elected to the Negro Business Guild, 1911-1912. Ms. Williamson remained principal until she retired in 1921. Prior to her retirement, Ms. Williamson donated land in the Maysville community, designating it for a school site. The school was eventually moved to the donated land, located on Rotterdam and Waterford Streets.
The Maysville School continued as an elementary school. That same year, the School Board appointed MS. ELIZA THOMPSON fourth principal. In 1924 the Maysville School was renamed Lillie Beacham Williamson School.
Ms. Thompson remained principal for 27 years until she retired in 1948. That same year, the School Board appointed Professor LEMUEL KILPATRICK KEEBY fifth principal. Williamson School now carried grades one through seven, with an additional grade added each year.
Williamson School was moved to the present site on Dublin Street and Swan Drive. The status of the school also changed, with Williamson now serving grades one through twelve.
In 1958, Williamson School reached a milestone when the Institution held the first commencement for graduates of grade twelve.
During this period, Mrs. Wilhelmina Blackman Morse (1921-1993), a prominent teacher at Williamson School, created the school song, “Ole Williamson.”
In 1964, the School Board approved construction of an elementary school, the location of which would be on Antwerp and Limerick Streets, in the Maysville community. Students who attended Williamson School’s lower grades transferred to the newly constructed George Hall Elementary School. In 1964, the school once serving grades one through twelve, became Lillie Beacham Williamson High School.
Following his untimely death, Professor Keeby was replaced by MR. FRED GREEN, Williamson High School’s sixth principal. Upon Green’s retirement, MR. ROBERT LIKELY was appointed Williamson’s seventh principal. MR. KIM STALEY was appointed the school’s eighth principal. Williamson High School underwent major renovations and other upgrades under the school’s ninth and current Principal, MR. TERRENCE MIXON.
Mrs. Carrie Brown Thomas served for more than 27 years as President of the Williamson Parent-Teacher Association (PTA). Others who served Williamson through the years also included: Mr. Jesse Thomas, Mrs. Earnestine Velmont Coleman Burden, Mr. Perez Isom, and Mr. Preston Burden.

Ole Williamson, Ole Williamson, We proudly hail thy name;
We’ve braved the storms, and come through all; And now we’re on to fame;
Ole Williamson, Ole Williamson, Let’s Fight! Fight! For what’s right;
We’ll sing on of the colors Black and White!
Ole Williamson, Ole Williamson, Our storms are not yet o’re;
We strive and strive and as we go, Our conflicts grow and grow;
Ole Williamson, Ole Williamson, Our vict’ry we’ll unfold;
We’ll march on with our banner to our goal!
